My girlfriend's birthday is coming up and I want to build her a row boat. She used to crew in collage. I believe the boats are called sculling boats, I think. I found a stitch-n-glue kit by glen-L. Has anyone built a boat like this?

Billy

I built a Payson (I think) design several years ago. I found the free plans in an issue of Wooden Boat with directions on how to build. It was a hard chine design made of 3/8" exterior plywood. It was simple to build and, once fiberglassed, a sturdy little boat. I kept it around for several years. The kids played in it in a creek that bordered our property. It sat outside uncovered the entire time. It held up remarkably well. I don't remember if it was a pram or a sculling boat or what. It was fun to build except for the fiberglassing which was a pain. I like some of Glen-L's designs and have considered building something again. Good luck with your project.

They are called rowing shells. Sculling is one a rower uses two oars. Sweep rowing is when each rower uses one oar.

Check out: http://www.fyneboatkits.com/trolleyed/4/28/index.htm
they are british, but I've seen some nice boats built on this plan.

Rigging on a rowing shell is very fickle. People spend years learning the techincal aspacts of it. If you are homebuilding a shell, get an "oar master" http://www.rowersworld.com/Store/Rowing/Products/alden_oarmaster_ii a once peice unit that takes care of foot placement, slidding seat and oarlock.
Then you need oars. A good used set can be found for about $100. New about $350

Since you are from Massachusetts, you might be able to find a boat that needs to be repaired or restored at one of the local clubs.

Check out http://www.row2k.com/ for club links, used boats for sail and other information.

good luck
