For a V6 mercury...?

I have access to just about everything that is needed to make one. Pipe threader, lathes, welder, etc. But I don't know the exact thread on the flywheel that I need to put on the eye so they match up. Instead of spending $40 on one, I thought I'd make one instead.

Does anyone know what those threads are on the flywheel or on the lifting eye that you would purchase at your dealer? Standard, Pipe, diameter, #/inch, etc.

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

KCLOST a thread gauge will give you threads/inch. All you need to do is measure the diameter.

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

Hi, If you don't have a thread guage or a micrometer, take the nut off of the flywheel and just look for a thread too match and hopefully you will know the size of the part it fit. From there you can make your lifting eye. Keep us posted.

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

Most of my work has been on johnson/evinrudes, but most flywheels have 3 smaller, threaded holes, usually 1/4 to 5/16's in the top for a flywheel puller. Made mine out of 1/4 in plate, and drilled a center hole to 1/2in for a lifting eye, then drilled oversize holes for the other three, and used 2in bolts with nuts, which I screw into the flywheel and tighten with the nuts. I then use my engine puller to remove the powerheads. Easy and no welding.

No holes on this flywheel...

The thread size is 1-1/2", I think 16tpi...

I can make the thing pretty easy with a piece of thick wall tubing but as it turns out I don't have access to a die that will cut those threads..

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

It's amazing how the manufacturer can profit so much on a simple item because the public needs it, which all it is a long rod with threads on one end and bent into a shape of a hook.

I used the hook on my Yamaha 225 SWS and a come-along and some chain and threw the chain over the cross beam of the storage shelter and was able to lift the engine with no problem.

Klost,
I have one that a machinist made for me several years ago. I've used it on a 150 and 115 Merc. It is a hollow tube with threads on the outside, screws into the the flywheel. If you still need the info email me. I'll take some pictures and try to spec it out for you.
JD

As I GOOGLED for the information I needed I came across this post/thread. It reminded me of many other times where I have come across this... why would this person not just post the information in the thread for others to learn from in the future instead of doing it emails and PM's? I mean no disrespect to anyone involved, that's not what this is about, I just think that if you have information that will benefit one, it's extremely likely the same information will benefit many others both now, and in the future.

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

The Mercury lifting eye is actually a lifting eye AND flywheel puller so it is two tools in one. And they are not $40. You can find them on E-bay cheaper than that. Why bother making something that is that inexpensive and would have your expensive engine hanging from it.

Silvertip, with all due respect, I think you may have misunderstood my point. I am not looking to make one, I was looking for information to verify that the one on ebay was indeed the correct size and thread for my engine. I ordered it today after figuring out that it should be the correct one. My point in bringing this old thread back to life is the fact that someone here knew the information needed and decided to share it via email or PM instead of just posting it so everyone can benefit. It's something I run across pretty often in forums and can't understand why that is. I thought the point of a forum is for discussions and helping all it's members. Not just one person at a time. Again, I am not trying to make a big deal out of this, it's just a rant I guess.

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

If you have a thread pitch gauge and a vernier you can figure out the diameter of the thread, your going to have to fit it anyway and your not going to find a bolt off the shelf that will fit.

...or you could spend $32 (shipping included) and get one tomorrow that is heat treated with a proper rated lifting eye and proper fine thread pusher bolt that will also pull the flywheel.

Yes, thank you 4JawChuck. I've already figured it out and ordered it yesterday from the same ebay people you mention. Cost came to 30.44 with shipping and should be here Friday.

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

No problem, I am a machinist and for $30 I would even start up the lathe and waste half a day making one...to buy the forged lifting eye alone would cost me $10-$15.

Re: Anyone ever made a Lifting Eye,

i must be really cheap and lazy because I just used a rod coupling and eye bolt from fastenal. I guess grainger would have worked but that was an extra 2 miles of driving.
