Hi again folks. Still trying to resurrect my twin 470's. Every dang bolt or nut i try to take off turns to cr##. These are 1983 motors. I found a broken bolt on an aluminum elbow in the exhaust so feel the need to button it up so my gf doesnt die from carbon monoxide poisoning in the cabin.
Its the elbow going way down to the bottom of the outdrive that would require an engine pull to replace. Its the section that houses the flappers. Good thing i looked at it because the flapper was nonexistent. I snaked a magnet down to the outdrive and pulled up the metal retainer. Then shoved a wet dry vac hose down to try to get the rest of the c***.
Anyhow my question is. I drilled out the broken bolt and had to cut off the remaining two bolts at the flange to get the elbow off. Now i have 2 studs sticking up that i halve to get out. I was thinking, i have a cheap hf welder. If i take some copper pipe and hammer it out to a washer, put a nut on top of the copper washer. Being that the elbow is aluminum and the studs are steel. Couldnt i put a copper washer underneith the studs. Disconnect the battery and weld some nuts on the studs and try to back them out?
I will need to create connectivity by tapping a steel nail into the oversized nut with a needlenose vice grip connected to the nut. I will clamp the welder to the needle nose vice grip to create the ground source.
Does this sound doable to get two metal studs out of an aluminum housing, or am i going to kill myself with 208 volts. I am a shade tree mechanic that has done some pretty creative stuff to get things working. But i try to be safe and thorough. (hence sealing the exhaust leak) Thank you for your professional advice in advance.
