anyone heard of a "hum bung" adapter for using gerry can as fuel tank?

local discount place had a rack of 'em. I bought a couple, for fun. It has a clear fuel line with a filter on the tip, and a plastic piece with an O-ring that fits a standard plastic gas can. (that's the "bung" part) Sticking out of the top is the tank connector like you'd find on an OEM gas tank. You plop it on, and then tighten the gerry can top piece (just the one with threads) over it to seal it. They had ones with different fittings. Basically you end up with a gerry can with the tank fitting sticking out of the pour/fill spout. On the instructions it says to loosen the vent on the gerry can to avoid vacuum. Made in Canada... says UL and CSA approved on the package.

Anyone heard of these? Seems like a good idea if you only have 1 "real" fuel tank. Much better than pouring gas in the boat.... or you could have a small 1 or 2 gallon gerry can to run a kicker.

BF,
I have one made of aluminum that fits your description. I use it in my inflatable on a 1 gallon plastic "jerry can" as a reserve, or when I am using my 4hp. One issue I found is the vent on the fuel container "drools" in rough water. I made a trap that screws on the vent that catches the liquid from escaping, but allows venting of vapour. If you just need a cheap small fuel tank, check out 3 gallon Sceptre tanks at a Home Hardware store. (under $30 in B.C.)

Cheers,
Snow.

Robby6950,
Why do you make that statement? The trap that I made for the jerry can vent never lets any liquid escape, and is made of petroleum compatable materials. The POS cap on a couple of Tempo portable tanks that I have do not have that integrity, and on those grounds I refuse to use them!

As for portable tanks....All of them must be able to vent vapour to allow for fuel expansion during a temperature increase, and let air in to compensate for consumed fuel.

Am I missing something in your statement?

Cheers,
Snow.

Robby, I think you misunderstood... as said already, what you end up with is as sealed as any other OB tank... Also, you don't need to open the vent part on the gerry can if it is an OMC fitting, they have a vent built into the connector.

Part of the sales blurb on these things sort of markets them as a safety device. A safer alternative to having to refill an OEM tank while on the water (where fumes will fill the lowest parts of the boat). The fact that they are UL and CSA approved suggested to me there probably wasn't some safety issue that I hadn't thought of (?).

I just thought it was a cool & simple idea and was surprised I hadn't seen or heard of 'em before. I haven't tried one yet, but can't imagine why it wouldn't work well. Maybe I'll end up using one once in a while instead of pouring/splashing gas around filling up my OMC tank(s).
