I got this boat when my uncle passed away and I cannot find anything out about it. It has Renken emblam on the sides and the regisration has the year as 1968. When I got the boat I found out everything had been took out and had been thrown away, so all I got was an empty hull, an engine that is no good and a trailer. I would like to find out what I could because I am going to have to get a new engine and would like to know what the limits are it has a 95HP on it now and to honest the faster the better. Also does anyone have any tips on reconditioning the outside hull. Any help would be grateful.<br />I cannot put a picture in this but if you think that you can help let me know and I will send a picture.

I have a 16 1/2 foot runabout that is rated for up to 120 hp. The 95 that was on it may just be all it can handle. How much trust do you have in that 60's transom? Is it in good(no rotten wood)shape?<br />Maybe some more knowledgeable people will chime in here soon.<br />Good luck<br /><br />Dave

Well xray, I'll be straight with you. Before I spent any time or money on your boat, I would have a knowledgable person check out the hull and transom, for structural integrity.<br /><br />I had a similar boat of 1970 vintage. Not knowing any better, I spent lots of time, and a conciderable amount of money getting it set up. Only later did I find out that the hull was very weak, and the transom rotted.<br /><br />While this boat could be restored or repaired, and made into a seaworthy ship, the expense and labor involved will be great. But if you are looking for a challenge, go for it.<br /><br />Personally, I would save my money and buy something lighter, and a little newer, say mid 70's or early eighties. The hulls were better and the motors more reliable.

Re: Anyone help ID this boat???

Look at the HIN (Hull Identification Number); if it begins with RBM, then, yes the boat was made by Renken Boat Manufacturing Co., Inc. The bad news is they went out of business in 1995. The good news is that United Marine Corp bought the assets and seems to have continued the Renken line. E-mail UMA with your entire HIN at custserv@unitedmarine.com, and hopefully they can tell you the info you want.

Most small boats built before 1973 had no Hull Id Number.

I have looked for a hull ID number but I have not been able to find anything. How would one go about checking the integrity of the hull? There is only one place around here to repair boats and he is very very expensive, no compition. To me it seems to be in good shape the transom is strong the floor has a few week places but then again I am not familar with boats.

Re: Anyone help ID this boat???

If the hull has become porous, the water will seep in. If water has sat in the boat, you will likely have not only floor damage, but rotted wood in the transom, and in the wood stringers which support the hull.<br /><br />The only way to know for sure is to get to the wood and examine it. You may have to chip some of the fiberglass off to get to the wood. If it is soft and spongy inside, it needs to be fixed.<br /><br />Even if its in good shape, I wouldn't put more than a 90hp on it.<br /><br />You will find more info and an idea of what to look for and fix, in the "project boats forum."<br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=26&submit=Go <br /><br />Spend a few hours there, reading up, and looking at the work others have done.<br /><br />You are likely going to have to replace the steering, controls, and cables, floor, trailer bearings and tires, just to start. I just want you to know what you are up against before you decide to start.<br /><br />Where are you located????

Re: Anyone help ID this boat???

I have an old Ebko that was in similar condition. I had to pull the floor and rebuild some of the braces. Its itchy work, fiberglassing, but I thought it was worth it. I pulled the engine off and checked the bolt holes for rot and also you should look for stress or cracks in the transom fiberglass. They will be hairline unless the hull is in extremely bad shape. It can be expensive, shop around for parts and take advice from the guys on this BB. There are a lot of experts out there.

Re: Anyone help ID this boat???

Roscoe I am located in Lyman, SC. I went yesterday evening and pulled it home I glanced over the hull and I noticed is little chips on the fiberglass on top. When I went to get the boat the drain plug had been pulled for how long I dont know I cannot find it. Like you said Roscoe a wheel bearing on the left side sure was whinning when we got home. I am going to take today and go over the fiberglass and check the wood in the transom and see what I have.

I always say "if it's for free, its for me" You are not going to loose much the check it out and see what you got. Odds our it could be restored, just depends how much time you have to do it. I have done only about three restores and found it takes alot more time than money, but it does take some money. If the wood is shot, gut it, do it right, take your time, and you will have a pretty decent rig. <br /><br />The boat I have now i brought home and people said I was nuts, now they all want to go on it.

I also have a boat I'd like to know more about but really all I have to go on is the hull number. Is there a resource (web or library would be fine) that let's me research the hull based on the HIN?

I'd suggest you decide if you really want to own a boat and then what budget you have. This old lady may have a very hard time keeping the value you put into it.<br /><br />wreck rider: Start your own topic instead of hi-jacking this one.<br /><br />No one are likely to enter a response to your question here, on Xray-Man's thread.
