Anyone here help out during Katrina?

I remember when katrina happened, I wanted to drive down there with my boat to help out. I almost did it, but I was in college at the time, and could not really do it. Plus it would have been like a 20 hr drive.

I was just wondering if anyone on here did that, and took their personal boat to rescue people out of the water.

Didn't go with a boat. Spent 60 days in Louisianna as a firefighter for Katrina/Rita/Wima rescue/relief. 12-20hrs per day with one day off during the 60. Slept most of that day.

Carried some of my students and chain saws down to Gulfport Ms. for a week. Cutting trees and putting on Blue tarps. Had to have someone lead to every house we worked on, No street signs and very few house numbers.

I was scheduled to go in order to rebuild the Federal Protective Service Communications system but we had an issue that took me to the other side of Colorado and out of going to New Orleans and we sent someone else in my place. It was unfortunate as I was really looking forward to the adventure but I met my wife during my time in the Western Slope so I guess that would be a bright spot in all of this.

We took a Task Force of helicopters down there skirting around/behind the storm. We were in charge of everything with spinning blades for a few weeks.

I slept in a closet as we worked to rescue folks or drop them supplies.

Truly some of the most rewarding moments of a 22 year career.

Went down to Bay St Louis the day after to help some friends that stayed during the storm. The water had receeded and there was boats and cars strung out everywhere. It was very surreal. To say it looked like a war zone is an understatement.

Be glad you didn't bring your boat - officials were "commandeering" them. After the flood waters receded, there were boats littered all over the place. Some were just the result of owners who motored out of flooded areas and were then evacuated to distant locations, but many were left by official agencies, once they were done with them.

While reading about the antics and misdeeds done by the ignorants that refused to evacuate and were stuck in the Superdome without running water or toilet facilities.... I figured it better that I should pass.

... anyone too ignorant to accept free help to get out of harms way when danger is imminent, doesn't need my help!!!... they should be seeing a bevy of shrinks instead of wondering if I could move them to safety in my little 17 footer!!!

Do you remember the small arms fire directed at the rescuers that didn't rescue the armed idiots first???

IF I did go down there to help I would have been heavily armed.
That place was total chaos.
Even some cops were getting into some criminal activity.

I'm going to remind those with the political comments that this is not allowed at the iboats forums. I'm also going to tell you that you pretty much don't know what you are talking about.

If you didn't live it, please be quiet.

BTW, most of the shooting that was discussed on the news, never happened. In fact, in one case, two civilians, one of whom was mentally retarded, were murdered by police officers. Additionally, a family was cut down while seeking safety. The father was shot multiple times, including once in the head. The mother lost her arm to a shotgun blast, her 17 year old daughter was shot four times and a nephew now wears a colostomy bag for the rest of his life, due to being shot in the abdomen. A family friend, then 19 years old, was also killed. The incident was immediately determined to be a bad shoot and the Lt. who made that judgement, immediately enaged in a coverup conspiracy with the officers involved. They planted an untraceable handgun, which was provided by a NOPD Sargeant, so that they could charge the brother of the retarded man, with 8 counts of attempted murder of a police officer. All of the officers involved were eventually prosecuted by the United States Attorney. During the trial, one of the officers testified that he watched other officers shoot some of the victims again, after they were already on the ground, suffering previous wounds.

This post is not meant to disrespect police officers. It is merely to point out that what was reported on the news six years ago and the true story, are quite often not the same thing.
