trying to get my '72 Merc 165 onto the water ASAP. No crank while starting(working on the wiring) but have no clue what this is. When I connect it to the battery it sounds like some kind of pump. it is in between the battery and the engine and in front of the exhaust tubes. Thanks guys

That is your trim pump which controls the outdrive trim rams. You shouldn't hear any noise from it or the solonoids on it when you connect power to it unless you are direct-wiring it to test it. When the battery is connected, you should only hear noise from it when pressing the up, up/out, or down buttons at the helm. Ur just up/down if it isn't the 3-button version.

go to the adults only sticky at the top of the i/o forum and look at #9. get yourself service manual #1. it has all the facts about your engine/drive in it. including pics of trim pumps and wiring diagrams...
