Well, I decided to replace. Having a heck of a time finding a good one for a reasonable price. ANY HELP OUT THERE???
It is a late 70's early 80's 80hp. Serial number off motor...6432900
I am doing a rebuild of a 80hp Mercury/Mariner powerhead, which had a blown piston.
When I went to reassemble and looked at the connecting rod journals I notice some slight pitting. The needle bearings look fine, though.
The pitting is maybe a couple or 3 thousandths (diameter and depth) and they are random on shaft maybe 30 -60 pits.
My experience with wheel bearings has to do with the thin hardening of the surface, and that over time the hardening may peel.
Is this the case with Mercury crankshafts?? Should I worry about this??
