Looking for some owner/previous owners thoughts on these bay boats.

I'm specifically looking at either the 18 or the 19ft boat...non-lined, rolled edge.

Thanks!
Shawn

Shawn,

I have not owned a Nitro, however I have owned a rolled edge bay boat.

I hated it.

The flat deadrise (aft) made it a handful to handle around docks and the ride was terrible. Not to mention, in more than a one foot chop you got VERY wet.

It was definetely a flat water boat.

Re: Anyone own a Nitro Bay Boat?

you make a good point with the docks.

However, I will rarely be near any docks, and I dont know of any alternatives to the flat deadrise for a skinny water boat. I intend to use it on the flats, and some at local lakes. However, there is no dock, just a ramp and a wall (which is easy to navigate no matter what). The waters in the lakes and the flats I frequent rarely get rough. This boat is also supposed to be one of the driest of it's type thanks to an added strake.

Help me out here, I'm open to constructive criticism.

Thanks
Shawn

Re: Anyone own a Nitro Bay Boat?

Shawn,

I would have to have the ride and seaworthyness shown to me before I would believe it.

Mine needed to run with a lot of negative trim. Thus, with any waves at all, it would take them over the bow.

Even at displacement speeds the bow didn't have enough lift to always clear a wave top. Same scenario, wave over bow. Thank goodness it was self bailing.

Anyway, maybe what you are really looking for is a real flats boat.

Either way, take a ride first.

Re: Anyone own a Nitro Bay Boat?

Djohns,

Once again, you are obviously much more knowledgable with boats than I am.

What does it take to get a salesman to take you for a ride in the boat, or one similar?

Is it as simple as a car ride? Will they let you 'test drive' the boats fairly easily?

The salesman was telling me something about the boat (being a nitro) that they changed to make it similar to a bass boat, Where it had a light/high front end that cleared the waves easily. It also has a pocket tunnel, which should help it lift. He called it something else though (also something that most bass boats have, almost like a cutout in the hull just in front of the prop.)

Now, I do realize he is a 'salesman', so his words could be 100% false. However, I have dealt with sales myself a little bit, so I like to believe there is some truth to his preaching.

What he was explaining to me made sense, and would help keep the boat high and dry on the nose..but I dont remember exactly what it was.

I do know that not having the fuel tank up under the front will help with nose weight...

Enlighten me.

Thanks again!
Shawn

Shawn,

My boat also had a small tunnel. About 1 1/2" deep and ran about the 2/3 the length of the boat.

I belive the narrow bow was key to the bow "stuffing" problem. It didn't provide enough surface area (lift) to float over the wave tops. So, it went through them. All I had up there was a trolling motor and that was a 19' boat with a 90" beam.

A bass boat hull is not a mild to rough water boat. That's why you hardly ever see one in salt water or on really big lakes (Great Lakes).

I take it you are looking at a new boat? As far as the test run goes, put it to them this way.

No ride-no sale.

Re: Anyone own a Nitro Bay Boat?

Djohns,

Looking for a new boat mainly for the warranty, and they are easier to finance. I am young so I get discriminated already when it comes to financing...so every little bit helps.

I am going to ask about the 'no ride/no sale' deal. It makes sense, but it just seems like a huge inconvenience for them to run 30mins to the local lake and try it out. There is a river nearby, but rivers and lakes handle 100% differently, I'd want to test it in a lake.

Here is the boat I'm looking at.
http://www.nitroboats.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.boat&nav=22&boat=688

However, the one i'm looking at has a 90hp saltwater version, and it isn't 9995, it is 13500 with a 500 rebate, so 13k rigged with destination, etc, before TTL. This is the best deal I've found so far on similar boats.

Just out of curiousity, which rolled edge did you own? Does it compare to this one?

Thanks!
Shawn

Re: Anyone own a Nitro Bay Boat?

Shawn,

That boat, in the pic., has a bit more flared bow than mine did. That can only help. It is very nice looking. Not what I expected to see.

Mine was a Palm Beach.

Put it to them this way. Risk $100.00

If I don't like it, no sale and you (dealer) keeps the $100.00. Go to the lake.

Nitro (Tracker) dealers are all over the scale, in my opinion, on professionalism and cooperation. They tend, sometimes, to run a bit of a hard sell atmosphere outfit.

Do not be intimidated. There are plenty of boats out there that are similar. Many are small outfits with good reputations. They'll "deal" too.

I'm not sure of your geographic location, but there are plenty of boat builders in the southeast that build boats like that.

Re: Anyone own a Nitro Bay Boat?

DJohns,

I'm in San Antonio, TX.

We have at least 10 dealers in town. I've gone to each one and looked at all of their models.

Unfortunately, they see me walk in and right away put me in the 'looker' category and not the 'buyer' category. I have to ask WAY too many questions, but that is due to my age, and I can't get around that.

Of the boats I looked at, I feel this one is the best value...but I definitely haven't seen EVERY boat. However, your less expensive boats are obviously going to be more popular, and I've looked at all the big names...so I've covered the ones that aren't an arm and a leg, which is what I need.

I looked inside a few of the hatches/access holes on some of the kenners, and noticed a lot of unfinished fiberglass, rough edges that wires may rub on, etc. The Fishmaster just looked cheap to me, and the salesman was a ***** , so I shyed away on those.

The Nitro seems to have the best fit finish of the three, AND it is cheaper. The salesman didn't fall from heaven, but he was better then most.

The other boats I looked at included the Sea Fox (liner boat, didn't like the loss of width, and added weight, but nice otherwise!), the Sea Pro (too much $$ for no more options), several aluminums, Key West ($$$), Hewes($$$), Maverick($$$), etc...

My dad used to own a kenner 21 with a similar hull to this one, and it rode pretty nice. With a strong head wind, you would get a little spray, but not a lot. Most of your spray came at low speed. It worked well in the water we fish, and I think this one would be just as good at least, most likely better.

However, I definitely want to go for a ride on it. I am going to go up there tomorrow, and I'll see what he says about it. I guess if I show him the $3k I have to put down on it, he will understand that I'm not just a young dreamer.

My only other consideration right now is finding a dealer with a newly used boat that has all service records, receipts, etc...possibly even a way to contact/meet the previous owner. I've seen a lot of 'NICE', 'Like New' boats that weren't taken care of...even though they looked perfect. The past 10 or 15 times on the water, I've been watching how a lot of people take care of their boats. In general, your younger guys (like me, go figure) tend to let them bang around on the docks, dont let them warm up, ram them onto the trailers, keep them dirty, etc..
This is the main reason I'm worried about a used boat...

I'll try the test ride and see what happens. If he wants to sell the boat, he'll go for it.

Shawn

Shawn,

Good luck to you. I think you'll be going for a ride-I mean on the lake. :D

The more I looked at that pic., the more I liked it. The bow flair should be advantageous.

Keep us posted.

Re: Anyone own a Nitro Bay Boat?

Thanks for the help.

I will be at least test riding a boat by the end of the week. There is a boat show coming to town late this month that I will most likely attend before I buy, unless I fall in love on the water, haha

Thanks again, I'll let you know what happens.

Shawn
