I've been trying to decide whether to paint or carpet my SS. I like the looks of carpet, but don't want to deal with stains and/or the carpet retaining water.

I've done some reading on Durabak and many other non-slip coatings and am not loving the cost of these products.

I came across the SW macropoxy 646 and am very intrigued. I called my local store and it's only $50 gallon(they will tint it for free)...and is approved for marine applications. I would def add a non-slip additive to it.
Take 6 days to fully cure.....14 days if it's going to be used below the waterline.

Anyone used this stuff?

I haven't priced it, but in a post of mine of a similar question it was pointed out to me that durabak is cheaper than good carpet and adhesive. Gelcoat is cheaper if you want to do the extra prep. It can be rolled with a textured roller for a nonskid surface.

Have you decided what you will use? I'm leaning toward Durabak...

With the 2 gallons of Macropoxy(1 gal epoxy/1 gal hardener), I would be able to do the floor(including front and rear casting decks).....at a cost of about $100 bucks.

I'm going to gel my deck. I was told if I don't buff the final coat it won't be terribly slick. I'm afraid the texture from the be liner roller won't give the look I want. When funds allow I want to put hydro turf in the areas that are necessary. If I wasn't, I would do one coat of textured durabak, and two coats of smooth. I saw that in a thread that looked very good, as good as gelcoat. But the gelcoat is a bit cheaper. Since it will be on a freshly laid deck , it will be easier to prep than an old glass and glue covered deck. With any luck I will keep bubbles away and the deck will come out smooth since I've learned I can use butt joints in my csm instead of overlapping it.

I think the gallon of gelcoat is going to cost me about 60$ to for my deck. I think when I priced durabak I came up with about 130$. But, for that 100$, you can do more coats. I might investigate this product myself. It is basically like epoxy resin, right? Meaning the deck would be very waterproof.

If you google the Macropoxy....people make large plywood aquariums using the macropoxy 646 "PW" formula as the waterproofing material on the inside of the tank. The PW stands for "potable water".

You might go to the SW site & look up the specs for Macropoxy 646, their data sheet for it clearly states DO NOT TINT....... So...........

7-Mag shot his Islander w/ it:
Im finally making some progress on the paint Job. I got the 2.5mm gun and guess what- I got clumps out of it too! I called Sherwin Williams up and they told me to thin it more, up to 25% (Macropoxy) I thinned it pretty hard and just finished putting my second coat on tonight! The first coat dried for 24 hours and it turned out great! It's some tough paint. Tomorrow I am going to scuff the hull and shoot a coat of Acrolon 218 and let that dry for a day too. Sunday I will shoot the last coat and get ready to flip it right side up again! I can't wait

I don't know how that hull turned out long term, but you might PM & check on it's longevity. I'm not sure he followed the cure times & had sufficient time between coats & esp before applying the Acrolon, another SW product , and definitely max'd out the thinning ratio at 25%, recommended max is 10%. Down in his thread @ post #141 in Oct 2012, he talks about fighting the paint. Shortly after he stopped posting, but has since been on the SC @CL/Ebay thread & posted again in Feb.....

Jbcurt, the "PW" is for applications that come into contact with potable water(drinking water tanks, aquariums, water pipes etc etc) I wouldn't use that version of the macropoxy.

This is the version that would be used
Macropoxy 646 - 100 - Protective & Marine

If you use it, please let us know how it turned out. And it's longevity.

Someone else used an SW epoxy based paint on his fiberglass build, but hasn't been active since he painted it & put it back in service...

Yeah...I was hoping to contact him and saw that he hadn't been around for a long time.

If the PW macropoxy version works well in saltwater fish tanks, I assume(hope) that the more industrial version would be very durable on a boat deck.

From what I've read on the SW website, tinting weakens the macropoxy....but only marginally. Worse case, I can forgo tinting it and apply it white. The only thing I'm not sure of yet....is it's cleanability, although I wouldnt think that epoxy would stain easily.

I was thinking more like the no tinting recommendation had to do with the "potable water" part, which of course you don't need to be concerned with.

On the material data sheet....it just says "tinting not recommended for immersion service".
