I have got the new to me 1979 Starcraft SS, 16 ft. There is a long list of things to fix in it including new motor, seats, bilge, electrics etc. Nothing that is completely urgent since everything works at the point.
So I have decided to get insurance on it and take it to the lake. I called 4-5 insurance companies and was quoted 300-400/year, which was expected. However I can get it only if i will do marine survey on it. That is the problem since it will cost me 300-400 just for survey. Moreover, my understanding is that when I will change the motor (maybe next week, maybe in a year) I will probably have to do another one. And another one when i will be doing electics and so on. I feel like I will have to do one after each mod that i am going to do to this boat.
Also I think taht surveior may find a bunch of things taht will prevent me from getting insurance - maybe not all connections are fused and so on. Than I will ahve to fix it and do another survey (another 300).

I feel very frustrated with the whole situation.

Another question - Does anyone in Ontario have Liability only insurance? Boat is worth 2000 at this point, so I do not really care.
Thanks

Liability coverage is the primary concern. This is covered by my household policy with Intact.

Liability on the trailers is part of my Auto Insurance policy.

Any other coverage on boats and trailers needs a rider attached to household insurance.

I'm insured thru State Farm. Like Bailey said, my home owner's ( or renter's policy) covers me for liabilty. Whenever the trailer is hooked up to my vehicle it is covered under the auto insurance policy. I have additional insurance on the boat and it is priced according to the value of the boat. Don't remember the particulars, but I think anything in the boat (fishing tackle, coolers, CD's etc) are also covered thru my home owner's policy. Shop around, I didn't need a survey but my boat is an '89.

Ok my problem is happily resolved.
When I originally called my insurance company asking about insurance for the boat they told me that they do not do it and direct me to other marine insurance place.
Well today I called them and asked if I can extend liability insurance from my house to the boat and they happily did it for me .... for 23 dollars a year!!!!!!!

Thanks guys!
