That was big of you but I can't help but wonder if your user name might be an indication of how you really may be. I did not read any of the threads but I know what it takes to apologize and you sound very sincere. I'll bet it is appreciated.

apology to DHPMarine & other dealership employees

I just wanted to post my reply to the "Thanks for the help" thread, in hopes that my sincere apology would be read by those who I may have offended before. It may be just my imagination, but it seems like I sometimes don't get many replies to my questions (particulary regarding the cold starting and ignition problems I am trying to troubleshoot on my '89 XP150) that I post here. <br /><br />"I'd also like to thank Dhadley, OBJ, Joe Reeves, moderator1, the list goes on and on. I'd also like to personally apologize again to DHPMARINE and anybody else I offended last summer(?) with my comments about the "$tealer". . . . I am very frustrated every time I have to deal with a few specific salespeople at one particular large local dealership, so I (wrongly) was spouting off about it in one of my threads. I know that these individuals do not = all dealers, so I should have and will just keep my big, fat yapper shut about it from now on and just exercise my right to not give that dealership my business anymore."

Well, my username comes from the old comedy "Johnny Dangerously" (starring Michael Keaton). My buddies and I enjoy ice fishing, and I've used the name on ice fishing forums where it was a lot better received! Guess I could change it if it also offends anyone here, but geeezzz. . . . Maybe people are just so tired of fighting with their outboards here that they're just not in much of a joking mood? At any rate, yes, I am very sincere and thanks for reading this post and taking the time to reply! ;)

I've seen worse names here on the forums. My son and I laughed for quite a while when we saw "assmonkey". I guess it's getting hard to come up with names not already taken. :)

I don't know what you said, but it takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. I know that it is frustating when no one replies as quickly as we think they should. But the way to get over your frustration is to remember that the people on this forum are everyday hard working people that give free advise to people who don't know exactly what to do.

Nope, haven't yet, but am slowly narrowing it down. I'm glad you saw this post, DHPMARINE. Clanton, I'll bump the thread, titled "'89 Evinrude XP150 spark & starting problems", up instead of explaining here where I'm currently at with the troubleshooting. I guess when I started out with this, I priced what I feel are the most likely suspects and figured I could replace all of them myself for about the same price (ballpark anyways) as I could take it to a local pro to work on. Since I'm up for the challenge, I figured it would be more satisfying and a good learning experience for me to use my manual and the advice of you guys here to try and fix it myself. Problem I'm having lately is that I'm so busy, it's hard to find time to work on it. Hopefully I'll get a little more done on it this weekend. As for the rest of you, nice job on the Roman Maroni references. . . . :D

Re: apology to DHPMarine & other dealership employees

Im not sure if this engine has quickstart, but if it does, the OEM manual is much better for checking the timer base. One check I do is pack output to coil at cranking rpms with sparkplugs installed, using a spark gap tester at the same time, cold engine. Then same check engine at idle and operating temp. If you have a spark on a cylinder at operating temp, and no spark on cold engine the timer is bad. When the ignition system is working up to specs, carbs cleaned and floats set, and you still have hard starting you can drill out the primer nipple located on the carbs to .062. This will allow more fuel into the cylinder for cold starting. There is a service bulletin. Some GTs and XPs were over jetted at the factory, there is also a bulletin on this that gives the model year and details for the correct jet size.

Re: apology to DHPMarine & other dealership employees

Thanks very much for the advice, Clanton. Hopefully I'll be able to do more troubleshooting this weekend. I'm sure I won't be able to get my hands on an OEM manual or spark gap tester by then, but I'll try the output test with my PVA-1 and multimeter. I don't really want to turn this thread into the troubleshooting thread because I already have another one started on that subject, but I'm guessing I'm going to have no cold output from my pack because I had no resistance readings ("infinite" resistance) when I checked the sensor coils (except between port and stbd "D" connector wires, where I got 441 Ohms). If this is the case, I won't be able to check for output at idle. For results of the other checks I have done so far, please see my thread titled "'89 Evinrude XP150 spark & starting problems". Someone here told me there are instructions for how to make your own spark gap tester, so I'll try and do a search for that today as it sounds like a valuable tool to have. Thanks again and have a great weekend!

Clanton, I just updated my other thread with results of some of the tests I did this weekend per your recommendations. Wasn't sure if you are "subscribed" to that thread or not. Thanks in advance if you have time to take a look at it!
