Re: Apparently nobody else gave a flip either...

Read the last two paragraphs:

"Wednesday night's 1-0 Chicago win had a 13.0 preliminary national rating with a 21 share. It was the highest-rated prime-time show on Fox since the final of "American Idol" in May, but still not enough to save the series from being the lowest-rated."

"Despite rating so low in comparison to other World Series, the four games of this series were each the highest rated prime-time network programs on their respective nights."

More competition from cable & internet. If baseball's not America's game, what is? American Idol? Survivor? Fear Factor? the Apprentice?

NASCAR

I am a major baseball fan. All three boys play and we all watch and follow to some degree, but I have been head over heels for NASCAR for about 7 years now and there are:

a) no scandals (drugs, wife beatings, charter boat sexcapades) b) very few whiners and spoiled brats c) fun stuff to follow every week d) a solid future

The difference is the role of the sponsor and although that mega role has turned off a lot of old time fans, IMHO it insures its future success. All of the above J. (As far as TV viewership)

The final game ratings are most likely do to Chicago waking up and realizing their team had a real chance to win it all. Chicago fans are really split between the Sox and the Cubs. Also a lot of 'Band Wagon" fans around the area.

As a sport, I think along with others that Football took over some time ago as the "national" sport.

It just doesn't ryhme very well... "Football, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet" :D

East coast, west coast teams will always get more viewers than north and south teams.

Just more people in those areas.

Ken

True... IMO just further proves that as a "national" sport, baseball has slipped. The only people that care about the playoffs or series anymore are the regional fans. I used to watch the series, no matter who was playing.

If you think nobody cared about the World Series, just wait for the Stanley Cup! If they actually play hockey this year.

I couldn't agree with QC more. Has anyone watched NASCAR Drivers 360? It was on F/X earlier this year. It showed what it was like to be NASCAR guys... and you could tell that the whole league is full of genuinely, nice good people.

Sean

Who cares what is "America's Game"? Do you follow a sport (or a faked up "reality" show) just because a lot of other people do?

I have said before, baseball is boring compared to hockey, basketball, soccer (football in other parts of the world), football. Low scoring pitchers' duels are the most boring of all.

NASCAR races are even more boring than that, except for the last few laps. Of course, I don't like crashes. Few former race drivers do.

I care nothing about ratings or other evidence of popularity with other people. I watch what I enjoy.

I don't think I am alone in that.

JB,

Pitcher's duels are a cerebral game. They are awesome if you have the patience and something is on the line . . . I especially like guys that are trapped at third with less than 2 outs in a tie game. Takes great defense and guts from a pitcher.

I definitely understand your NASCAR comments. I hate crashes too, can't stand plate races, love Bristol, Martinsville and Richmond. Anyway, to me it is a perfect marriage of business and sport. From building the pit crew to matching a driver to a sponsor to the tech stuff in the garage (including the computers). It is a very Darwinian deal that has a very long future because of that marriage. I even like Silly Season . . .

JB you must be the guy who gets there in the 6th inning & says "No score? Good, I haven't missed anything." :D :D :D :D

I've tried to watch NASCAR...nice buzzing sound with those colorful little cars going round and round and round and...sorry, must have dropped off there. Let's watch golf instead, much more exciting. But golfing fatalities are just so rare these days.
