what do you use to hold the gasket in place during drive install

while i'm on the topic, and awaiting delivery of my manual to tell me the ins and outs of installing the drive - do you put the gasket on the drive before installing - or on the back of the boat

Assuming you are referring to the rubber gasket that fits in a groove around the water and exhaust ports. I've always used Mercs bellows adheisive to hold that type seal in place, but that's because it was always handy. Any contact cement, will work. If it fits the groove nicely, even a little grease will hold it.
