I have recently changed out the timing belt and replaced the exhaust manifold with an aftermarket stainless one from Hi tek marine and now the engine just doesn't,t sound quite as smooth as it used to. It still runs pretty good once warmed up though, although the engine does seem to be running rich from the increase in black exhaust. I spent a lot of time making sure the three marks on the belt matched the pulleys as depicted in the oem manual. I am wondering if the decreased resistance from the aftermarket manifold would cause the engine to run rich and somewhat rougher or if I somehow stuffed it up and missed the timing by a tooth or two? I should mention that I have done nothing with the carb settings as of yet. I have checked the plugs, distributor etc, all good, The fuel pump has been changed as well. Could I position piston 1 at TDC and confirm timing by the position of the rotor? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
