hi, I have a 1993 wellcraft excel with the volvo penta 430b motor and sp cd drive. I bought the boat with a cracked block so pulled the old motor from the bellhousing, leaving the drive in place and motor mounts on the stringers. When I put the new motor in it went right on the spline and I bolted it back up. From what I understand if the drive is left in place you don't need and aligning tool, however when I run the motor it vibrates the hull at higher rpms when ran on flush muffs I figured if the bellhousing was left in place it should be aligned but have I missed a step. what is the correct engine aligning process with this setup. it doesn't have a gimball bearing from what ive read. I haven't run it yet on the lake so are vibrations normal when ran on muffs or should I recheck alignment? Thanks Leon.

If the blocks cracked??Neglect.
Did you check the u-joint bellows?
The cracked block leads me to believe the bearings on the primary drive shaft might be bad?
Pull the top of the drive and check the PDS and u-joints for slop.

Re: aq series engine alignment

Her is a thread describing how to check the alignment.

I agree with JerryJerry05 that you should pull the upper gear box on the outdrive to check the ujoints and PDS (primary drive shaft). Heres how you pull it:

Let us know what you find.

Welcome to iboats,btw.;)

thanks guys, I will pull the drive. I did notice the the drive shaft in the bell housing did move a little but thought it was supposed to have a little play. Would that be a bad pds bearing. thanks again.

Yes there should be no play. Pull the upper using the instructions above. Unfortunately you'll have to pull the motor as well, but you should have that procedure mastered by now.;)

Have a look at this thread as well.

Also, some get stuck on removing the helmet pin. I did... Here's how that works.

*Note - instead of the 2-m6 bolts, just use two 1/4 - 20 bolts to jack the pin out of the hole.
