aq125 intake valve

I have an AQ125B and was getting backfiring thrugh the carb. I found the problem to be a bad intake valve on #4. My question is will an automotive valve work in it , and what model should i ask the part store for?

I would say that an automotive valve would work fine but someone will more than likely come up with a coast guard regualtion and SAE J standard and say that they will not. <br /><br />Just A Joke.<br /><br />First question is why did the valve fail, improper fuel, fuel ratio, bad plug........<br /><br />I'd try to figure out that before you eat the others.<br /><br />Usually when a valve goes bad the seat, guides or seals need replacing as well, I'd have the head rebuit by a machine shop if it were me.

go to a junk yard and pull entire cylinder head out of mid 80's volvo 240 ..<br /><br /><br />Dom

Matt27, just be a little careful with this, some 2.3L marinised VP motors ran different valves and springs, and the headgasket is definetly not auto.<br /><br />Remove the valve and take it to an parts supplier, tell them its a 2.3L volvo motor - they will likely match it perfectly. What doman suggested will work but you will need to swap the entire head (not just the valve) and use marine grade gaskets.<br /><br />Aldo

thanks i ordered a valve from my volvo car dealer and head gasket, whats the differance on the head gasket? <br />p.s. my motor is a 2.1 litre

"Marine" head gaskets are normally stainless steel. I am not sure if Volvo has different heads in their marine engine from their automotive. It may be a mute point.<br /><br />I have a small block Chevy, so it's a whole different kettle of fish. On my engine the heads and the valve train are the same, marine or otherwise... so I've been told by the professionals. <br /><br />Around here guys use "auto" head gaskets (on SBC engines) with no negative side effects. It's all fresh water though. If you are in salt or brackish I would use the stainless. But You are the Captan and it's your call.<br /><br />Like Elk said... someone is now searching all the manuals for the regulations....

The 125's have a closed cooling system, so head gasket material is not a problem as long as there is antifreeze in the system.<br />You will need a special kit with tools and shims for doing the valve adjustment.
