1983 Bayliner Trophy Volvo Penta AQ125a 270 outdrive

Early in the season, starter was not working, sounded like it was trying to engage but didn't. Ordered and installed new starter, it worked fine the first 4 or 5 trips on the water. Last week we saw (raw) water dripping from a hole right under the starter. When we got it back home, the new starter no longer worked, removed it and found it was had quite a bit of raw water in it. What would cause raw water to get into the flywheel cover area?
After searching the forum, it looks like the desciption under http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=574501
is closest to my problem....
Replacing both the outdrive rubber rings may fix my problem?
Any other location the water may be coming from?

Thanks for any help.

Those rings have nothing to do with getting water into the flywheel housing.
You have water in your ujoint bellow, which goes through the bearings in the flywheel cover housing, and gets into the starter.

Pull the engine, change the bearing and seals in the flywheel cover, inspect the flex plate and pilot bearing, if rusty replace.
Check the drive for water intrusion. Repair input shaft seal in upper gear box, replace ujoints, and bellows. and you should be ready to go boating again.

Here is a thread a lot closer to your problem. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=265021

Thanks for the quick reply. Looks like I have my off season work cut out for me.
I'll start ordering the basic parts before starting.

Save yourself a lot of ordering, take things apart, find what all is wrong then order parts.
Saves a bunch of different orders and ordering duplicates in some items you could need.
