Aq125 with 270 outdrive carb and cooling questions

i have the famous aq125, but I’m new to these engines.

The boat was sitting for years and finally got it running but my problem
lies with the carb and cooling system.
i rebuilt the carb with a new rebuild kit and seems to be running fine, but if I cover the small hole above the idle jet on the big plate where the air
filter sits, then it runs and revs, if it’s not covered, it dies and lags.
Pictures below...

and the 270 doesn’t seem to be sucking in raw water with the muffs, so I
took off the connector from the water pickup tube (chrome tube) from the
inside the engine compartment and connected it to the rubber hose with the
garden hose, I assume it was pumping water cause of the big vapor cloud
coming out of the exhaust.

i think I need an impeller and please tell me what u think. I need to know what the hole on the carb goes to as well. Please let me know what I’m missing thanks!

ijmpellers are a change every few years item. so is the raw water inlet casting on the drive (where the hose attaches to the drive).

change your impeller, change your raw water inlet casting, and use a cork to plug up the lower intake hole.

I have that lower unit plug in as of right now, and everything is hooked up besides the inlet pipe where I disconnected where the metal pipe and rubber hose meet, I have the picture above

The Volvo drives are notoriously difficult to run on muffs.
Something about the shape and how far forward the inlets are on the outdrive.
I always just connect to the hose just like you are doing. Alternatively I put the entire outdrive down in a tub of water. I have a cut down 55 gallon plastic drum I use for testing.

Try to run it with the spark arrestor on. I remember on mine that it would always run a bit rough without it but once it was on it would run fine. This is important when you tune the idle air mixture.

Far enough, but I don’t know how much water is suppose to shoot out of the exhaust, it was turning to vapor , I think my seawater impeller is in need of replacing because my engine was getting hot, not circulating enough cool water through it fast enough.

and what’s up with the carb? Why do I have to cover that hole to make it run at idle? What is suppose to be there?
