AQ125a with 270 Outdrive Questions

I recently aquired an 83' bayliner with an AQ125a and 270 outdrive. We got it in the water this weekend for the first time and all in all the boat performed very well. I have two questions though:

1. When the drive is in gear and throttle is slowly applied it will start to accelerate and then the motor will stall around 2000RPM. If I go from idle to near WOT or greater (3000RPM) the boat accelerates beatifully and runs smooth. Once the boat has gotten up to plane I can pull back on the throttle no problem. It doesn't do this when in neutral and it will idle without issues. Where should I start looking for issues?

2. When going in a straight line the boat sounds great, but when I start to turn in either direction I hear a "groaning" sound and some vibration coming from what I believe is the outdrive. Is this a sign the u-joint is going out? If so, how can I tell if they it is bad?

Thanks for all the help.

It appears that the accelerator circuit in the carburetor is clogged up. The little “U” shaped pipe on the top of the carburetor should shoot gas when the throttle is advanced. A good time to go through the carburetor.
The joints and maybe the support bearing on the output shaft could need replacing. Look closely at the bellows for any cracks or tears and report back.

Thanks for the info.

Do you think a carb rebuild is in order or maybe start with some seafoam or other carb cleaner? I don't have much info on the boat, except that is appears to have been maintained regularly but it hasn't been in the water in a few years.

I looked at the bellows before we launched it and they are intact. I haven't witnessed any leaking oil or water from them. If the drive bellow leaks water would that show up in the oil in the lower unit? It is pretty easy to check the oil in the lower unit.

Usually on a Volvo when the bellows leaks water still does not enter the drive. Most times the water enters from the shift unit on the back of the drive. However if there is noise in the bellows area you need to remove the top of the drive to be able to replace the joints and support bearing. The whole drive does not have to come off to do this. Get a genuine Volvo service manual.
Going through the carburetor is a good idea at this time since the boat was sitting, there is probably dried gummed gas in some of the passages. Sea Foam is a good product but it may be a waste of time when the carburetor needs to come apart.

The joints should not be a problem that you have located.
You now need to remove the shaft and bearing in the adapter housing.
There is a seal that you need to pull after the upper drive is removed. There is a snap ring that is under the seal and then you clean out the cavity, there is another snap ring to remove then with a slide hammer threaded into the center of the shaft the shaft and bearing should come out.

Yes, #61 is correct. The bearing and seal can be purchased at any bearing supply house. They are not expensive, try one of them first. The only thing that could give you a problem is if the shaft is rusted into the flex plate on the flywheel. Keep your fingers crossed.
