AQ131 Serious Problem

My 1987 Bayliner Capri stopped running yesterday while I was towing a skier. I heard a faint pop/backfire and it died and won't start. Starter goes and belts move but does not sound like there is any engine/compression noise. It kind of whines when it turns over. I have feeling it is pretty serious. Where do I begin to diagnose this?

Thank you,
John

Have you actually looked at the engine to see if the timing belt is on it or not?

Just a wild guess, but it sounds like your timing belt may have broke or jumped. If that is the case, change the belt and make sure the sprockets are clean and not coated with rust. You are lucky, these engines are not interference fit engines so your valves should be OK. I would check that first. If that is OK, then check compression, and then for fuel and spark.

Good luck and have a great day,

Rob.

Thank you! It was the timing belt and is back out on water. :) Do I need to set the timing on this or should it be fine with new belt and pulleys all in right spot?

Thanks,
John

Absolutly reset the timing.
