AQ131A rebuild question

I've been told (or read somewhere) that an AQ131A 4 cylinder engine (1987 vintage) with bad compression cannot be rebuilt. Either because it's prohibitively expensive or there are no replacement pistons or something along that line.

Is that the case? Are there any reasonable options? Thanks for your input.

Re: AQ131A rebuild question

Personally, I would get a replacement engine out of a car, you can get one from a 1987-1993 Volvo 240, then transfer all your old marine components to the car engine and install it in your boat. The boat engine is the same as the car engine except for the marine components. If you look for a used boat engine they will want so much more money than a used car engine even though they are essentially the same thing.

The components for rebuild may not be available from Volvo but aftermarket companies make rebuild kits for these things. I think rebuilding is cost prohibitive compared to swapping a good used engine, that's why I would go that route.

Thanks for your thoughts. I think a replacement car engine makes sense. My only hesitation on that is my own inability to judge a good used engine from a bad one. On the other hand, if I research it a bit I will probably find a way to make a good choice. I'll update my search. Thanks again.
