AQ131A starting issues, Any Help?

First the scenario...boat ran awesome last year, I have an 86 Bayliner Capri with an AQ131A volvo penta motor.

Had some cold start issues in the spring then was fine. In july an underwater pylon was hit and messed up the prop, after docking that night and swapping props, the motor wouldnt start, found timing had jumped..

To date, timing belt reset to 6 degrees BTDC, new plugs, wires. Inspected distributor and rotor, those and points like new.

Before the replacements above, it was noted that timing jump was found due to motor not starting, but backfiring up through the carb.

Anyways, all looks great, engine cranks, got fuel and spark, doesnt start. No backfiring.

Totally lost now.

Those engines are cold blooded as you found. No choke, so they need to be helped through the cold starts by pumping the throttle before starting a couple times and letting the boat warm up at 1200rpm before heading out.

To date, timing belt reset to 6 degrees BTDC

So you replaced the belt and reset the timing? Have you ever set the dwell using a meter?

How about a compression test?

Did you pour a little gas down the carb to try to get it running?

Welcome, btw.:)

Thanks for the welcome, its nice as i have been reading i boats for quite a while.

I've checked most everything, after reading my post let me clear a few things...prop was hit and jumped timing, when trying to start it that day under various tests evrytime it backfired through the carb. Since then, fuse relay replaced as it fried itself, new plugs and wires, reset timing and checked for compression stroke, checked dist, rotor and points, all good. now when its turned over its getting gas and spark, gas to the point it floods itself and when cranking i see the gas misting out of the carb. im thinking to much fuel????

I'm actually thinking of going back to step one, taking the timing from 6* BTDC to TDC and retracing my steps. I found in the owners manual the original specs to the idling setting and air setting for the carb and planning on readjusting those also.

Any Tips? Thanks for all your advice....

Ok, so you think the timing belt jumped when you hit something?

If so, did you replace the timing belt??

Then, it was backfiring through the carb, then you replaced a fuse or relay, along with plugs, wires and reset the timing, but it hasn't run since? I'm still not clear on this part. Do you have a timing light and a dwell meter?

So you set the timing by feeling for the comp stroke and lined everything up properly with the rotor pointing at #1 cylinder, etc?

I would do a compression test. If you have low compression it could mean you don't have the timing belt installed correctly.
If you have spark and fuel, timing is the last variable, spark timing and valve timing.

Also make sure the spark plug wires are in the correct order.

Well, I did some research last night, sort of schooled myself looking at a bunch of other threads in regards to timing, distributers and carbs.

Took everything back off last night and went to step one. After looking at what you posted i found my distributer inbetween the firing cycles of 1 and 3, reset timing and crank positions, reinstalled everything, the cold heart b***h fired after some coaxing. adjusted the idle point and air valve on the carb and it ran smoother than ive ever heard it before.

Trust me...im laughing at myself also....Thanks for the posts...between your thoughts and other threads it worked awesome......

Well Mike, I'm glad you got it started and running. Although I don't understand what you're saying half the time, I wish you happy boating.
