I had some issues with timing last year, and have resolved those. The engine still backfires even after a carb rebuild, so I got to thinking maybe the distributor or timing was a little off. I rotated the crank until the #1 cylinder was TDC and rechecked the timing marks, all line up perfectly. I noticed that the distributor was turned as far as it could go (hold down bold wouldn't let it move any futher in the direction it would need to go to advance). I decided to leave the timing as is since it was lined up correctly and then remove the distributor and turn it so when placed back in the engine it would be in the correct position and allow me to adjust if necessary. When I removed the distributor, i turned the shaft before putting it back in to allow the rotor to be able to line up with #1 plug on the cap. I pushed it back in and and it started right up nice and smooth, however, when I attach the timing light it says it is at about 30 degrees rather than the 6 it should be? the RPMs are at 900 and the engine sounds and feels great. Havent taken it out on the water yet because I am not sure if this is ok? and If not, how do I fix it? If I turn the distributor one direction it speeds up, if I turn it the other it slows down, but none get me to 6 degrees. A little confused as to what I may have or have not done. THanks. Dennis
