Sounds wired backwards.
When you push the switch UP, does the leg go UP?

yes , the system works properly.......goes up when switch is up , and down when switch is down........it all works fine until it hits the limit switch..............

thanks

Re: aq170c/270 volvo penta

Next question,
when it hits the limit switch can you here the motor still running?
Is this a USA model boat or no, the wiring was different for non-USA as far as I can tell.

Was the boat always like this?

I suspect both the motor and the cabin switch are backwards.
The gear/relay housing internal wiring is not normally re-arranged by boat owners.

When you try up, does the tilt motor run but nothing happen? Or when you hit the up button nothing happens, no noise, click or anything?

when it hits the limit switch , it stops the motor ......stops by cutting power , not by overload ............yes this is a usa boat ......i have only owned the boat for two years .......when i purchased the boat the mechanical lift was missing....i purchased the complete lift system used ( factory wire harness, dash switch, relay box ,and motor ) from a boat salvage yard ...the system was complete and no wires were altered......

once the tilt is all the way down and it triggers the limit switch , it does nothing when i push the switch up.......no click , no noise , nothing.............otherwise the lift works properly
thanks

Re: aq170c/270 volvo penta

Was it working ok and then just stopped working, or has it always been this way since you owned it?
Do you have the 3 wire tilt motor?
One last question, does the light come on when you move the switch to the up position, I know the lift doesn't run, but does the light come on.

Re: aq170c/270 volvo penta

i think it did this from day one , if i watch the out drive and release the down switch as soon as the lock pin is contacted ......the unit will work and come up...............it's only after it engages the limit switch that it will not raise ....the lift motor is two wire ......

sorry i missed the last part of your post ......the light goes out when the limit switch is triggered and does not come back on when the switch is moved to the up position........

What do you have to do to get it to work again after it stops?

Re: aq170c/270 volvo penta

i have to disconnect the wires from the motor to the control box and then jumper wire the motor to make run just long enough to release the limit switch ..........then it functions normaly

Re: aq170c/270 volvo penta

The limit switch is supposed to be in the negative path of only one relay.
If someone wired it wrong, that is in the negative leg of BOTH relays, it could explain the situation.

With the leg partly raised.
Mark the motor wires with masking tape before disconnecting
Try reversing the two leads to the motor IF IT IS A TWO WIRE MOTOR.
Ignore the direction of the cabin toggle switch and see if it behaves differently.

Did you find the wiring diagram and understand it?
Or are you a mechanic versus an electrician :)

I could open my control box up and take pictures, but it is pretty congested in there.

Side note;
Just got back from the Mullica River, ran good going out, sputtered and coughed coming back.
Need to clean old some old gas me thinks.

Re: aq170c/270 volvo penta

I sure can't tell you by part number, but since you have a two wire motor, it sounds like you may have a newer lift mechanism on your 270 which only came with a 3 wire setup (according to the manuals).
Below are the wiring diagrams from the manual, I colorized them to make them easier to read and understand.
The wiring is different, so look at both and see which setup you actually have. It's possible someone hacked a two wire motor on the 270 3 wire system and is why it doesn't work right. Each had different relays, so you see how this is going.

thanks for the diagrams......part of this mess that makes this hard for me to understand , is that the wiring is all "factory " harnessed....there are no hacked wires.....the lead from the control box to the motor is a factory made two wire and the lead on the motor is two wire .....and the colors even match ........i know these systems work well when they work correctly , however it' awfully confuseing.................
thanks

Match what? The 2 wiring diagram I linked to?

Is the wiring diagram for the 280 the same as what you have in your relay box?

OK, In my opinion, that is good news.
It means that at some point, one of the two relays (most likely the DOWN relay) inside the control head was replaced and then re-wired wrong.
I'll get pictures tonight (boat is in driveway and I'm replacing the carb tonight).

You should have three wires running to front, one for UP, one for DOWN, and one for LIGHT.
I just hooked up my LIGHT last week, it's nice seeing that light go off, saves walking all the way back to the stern to see if the leg went down and locked.
