AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

Recently bought a Winner speedboat to restore with a AQ171C engine fitted.. i knew it had engine troubles when i purchased it.. the cambelt had stripped the teeth on the crank pulley, the previous owner advised it happened when he started the engine so just on the starter.. fingers crossed i may not have been to bad!

I have removed the covers and cleaned up the rusty pulleys, removed the cam cover and all looks very clean under there, having a look at the gaps between the cam lobes and the valve caps 1 and 4 cylinders on the left hand camshaft have more gap than the others, 4 being the worst the others are very close to the lobes..

Questions

Are bent vales the likley cause of this?

Ref head gaskets, as this engine uses a heat exchanger and antifreeze, ie no salt water through the head, can i use a car gasket as i belive 1989 volvo 16v dohc gaskets are the same.. i know i will need to use a marine one on the exhaust gasket.. but the difference in price for the gaskets is massive here in the UK

Many thanks in advance for any information or direction that you can offer...

Regards Jim

Re: AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

The 171 is an interference engine, meaning if the crankshaft turns and the cams do not, the pistons will hit some valves.

Re: AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

I worked at a Volvo Penta dealership. We didn't experiment with automotive parts on customers boats. So no, I don't know the answer on your automotive head gasket.

Re: AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

its supposed to be a red block engine, which was used in the cars also, the only differences is the crank is forged and the stroke is different the the "car" engines, the timing belt should be the same and the head gaskets and exhaust, I have read about other people using the Head gaskets and other parts for the car engines with no problems.

I have the same problem and i researched it for a long time. I have yet to do it though. Let us know what you discover if you do try it.

thanks for the help, removed the head today and i have 8 bent valves, all on the one side so i think these are the intake valves..

Re: AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

Thanks for responding with that, I dont ready much where anyone actually responds, i guess my hope of everything being okay with mine is not going to happen, My engine did the exact same thing yours did, only difference is i got stuck on the lake lol, I have yet to pull it apart because i have to remove all my seats to have any room to work on it.

If you do match up any automotive parts to fit please let me know, i plan on doing the work on my boat once it cools off here in Texas, it has been about 100 deg and i don't really want to start on a project like that at this time. If however i do i will try to match up parts and post so future people can see what works and what doesn't work.

Re: AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

I used automotive head gasket on mine, as well as intake and possibly even exhaust manifold gaskets as well. You can also use automotive water circulation pump and timing belt and tensioner as well. Good luck.

Re: AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

Just a quick update,

Dropped the head of at Engineering shop, and it just the 8 Exhaust valves, guides are all good, so having a full refurb on this with new valves, the engineering shop has sourced automotive ones from TRW who originally made the valves for Volvo and are Stellite coated so happy days, these cost less than 50% of the Volvo Penta ones which i pressume are the same only in a different box..!

The Head Gasket kit i sourced is for a Automotive B234F 16v DOHC and is identical to the one currently fitted, this cost lest than 50% of the genuine item also..

if i find out any other information i will add to the thread.. It would be great to have a sticky thread with compatable parts for the AQ171c

Once again thanks for all the advice/help

Re: AQ171C Cambelt/valve question

thanks for the update, i researched for 2 weeks and was only hoping that the parts would fit but still very hesitant about it, now since i know that they will then i will probably start working on the boat asap to get it back on the water, i only have had the boat out 2x since i purchased it and it broke both and i was starting to regret getting a boat with a "volvo" engine, but this changes everything.

Thanks again.
