I'm in the process of putting together my upper case after repairing the u-joints and inspecting gears, bearings, etc.
I'm looking at the steel housing for the bearing box and notice that the bearing race for the drive gear end of the housing doesn't look like it is completely seated all the way down. There seems to be a thin metal ring in the area between the backside of the bearing race and where it looks like the race should seat into. This my first time working on 280's so I'm not sure if the race should be seated deeper or if this gap is suppose to be there and the metal ring I see is actually the oil defector ring (ref. P/N 16 on VP schematic).
