hi everyone and happy new year to yous all!!

im needing some help getting my aq211a volvo penta running again. it was running last season..

ive charged the batteries up. replaced the starter motor. replaced the starter relay.

i have a click from the starter relay when i try to turn her over. but nothing at all from the starter1

on trying to start her up today. i could smell burning from the top of the engine. on inspection the RESISTER thats next to my ignition ht coil was getting very hot and started to smoke/burn.!!

previously when trying to start her up. i might have over cranked her up on the starter....then all i get is the click from the relay.

the fuse that comes off the solenoid which goes to the leg for raising and dropping blew also.

any help would be greatly appreciated thanks..

Here is how to check the electrical system
HOW TO: Troubleshooting your engines starting system - Page 1 - 167035

It really sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere. Perhaps a loose or faulty ground or positive battery cable.

Not sure how that would cause the resistor to melt, unless it's wired wrong. Maybe the points are burned and why you had to crank so much that killed the system.

I think the resistor is there to drop the voltage from 12 to 9 for the coil.
Sounds like a short, Possible a pinched wire when you changed the starter?
Possibly the wires on wrong??

Re: aq211a non starter

ok ive noticed that the ballast resistor thats next to the coil gets very hot.. even when i haven't turned the key to start the engine.

could it be that ive wired the starter up wrong??

sound plaussable.

Re: aq211a non starter

If the resistor gets hot when you have the ignition switch turned to the off position, then something is wired wrong, or the ignition switch has failed and is always on.

If you turn the key to the run (not start) position, the resistor will get hot.

Post a picture of how you have your starter wired, not sure how you could wire it wrong to cause that. Nothing from the starter goes to the ballast resistor.

This drawing shows how the coil and ballast resistor is wired, you have a slave relay instead of a solenoid as shown in the picture, but that makes no difference with your problem.

Thanks for your advice.

Well today i checked the wiring to the starter again. It turns out i connected the two
Small wires that are on the solenoid wrong.
The small brown and yellow wire.
On the old solenoid the brown was at the top. On the new one it has to be on the bottom side!

Just need some petrol and shes good.!!
