AQ225 Engine Mounts

A few days ago I pull the engine on my 1986 Bayliner capri 1950, VP AQ225E/275 Drive to change the connecting shaft bearings. After I had the engine out I noticed that engine mount area on the starboard side of the bilge was bowing out and soft, the two lag bolts were also loose when I removed them (still required a rachet to removed them). Where the engine mount sits has sagged about 1/2". I can stand on this area and it still seems solid, but there is obviously some rot going on in the area. It seems to be just in a 10-12" area under the mount. Port side is fine.

My question is, what is this mount area comprised of ? I'd like to tear out this mounting section and reinforce it, but would like to know what these lag bolts screw into?

Seems like all of the soft spots on this boat have been in the rear starboard corner, I'm suspecting it's because the swim platform is located in the same corner, with lots of water getting dragged into the boat there.

Re: AQ225 Engine Mounts

Hi rav221,

Sorry to be the bearer of possibly bad news, but it sounds like your boat has the dreaded rot syndrome that seems to affect most boats, especially Bayliners that are more than a decade old...

Post up some pictures of the damaged area...along with close ups, include a couple of long shots and overall shots...

More than likely there is a rotten stringer next to the mount...most of those mounts are plywood layers, laminated to get a certain thickness, then coated with polyester resin and cloth to help make them water resistant and strong...

Best of Luck,
GT1M
