4th time out on the water. Everything has been running great. In 20' of water we hit a log and sheared something. I am still learning about this boat. What is the most likely thing that might have sheared? In the parts breakdown I see a roll pin in the gear set. Is that what normally breaks? Please help. Thanks, Dave

Must be further up in the sterndrive. I pulled Output shaft and it is in good shape.

Finally got the lower unit off. Sheared the counter shaft. Cant get the nut loose on the bottom of the shaft. I might be better off replacing the entire lower unit. I see some on Ebay.
My next question is- a 275 is a 275. Right? It doesn't matter if it was on a 4 cyl engine or an 8 cylinder engine. Correct? Is there nothing to prevent this kind of accident?

270, 280, 290, lowers will work but the lower unit is where the Volvo's change gear ratio's, so you need to keep the same ratio.

How do I determine which gear ratio I have?

I have replaced the lower vertical shaft. Everything seems to be working correctly. I noticed a very slight bend in the prop output shaft. This may have been there before. How critical is this problem? Please help.
Thanks,
Dave

This is just my opinon, but if you can see it by eye then it is bad enough to fix. Running it like that at any kind of rpm can hurt the carrier housing bearings and more with the weight of the prop spinning off axis and the ensuing vibrations.
