Took boat out today. It was hard to start backfire and when it did start it sounded like it was popping real loud out the exhausted. It started to idle then noticed a ticking sound (almost like lifter) got boat up to 3000rpm ran smooth but at 3200 it shut down back to 2000rpm. I came back to dock with a low ticking sound. It ticks as it revs up and won't go away. I put a rod up to valve covers to listen but can't hear anything except for a bell ring near cylinder #1 possibly. I took that spark plug out two weeks ago could I have messed something up? Or could it be timing off?

Look at the plug wires, crank it at night and look for arcing. I also take all the plugs out and inspect, I had a plug ceramic crack and it would arc to the heads.

Or your ticking could be exhaust leaking from the manifold gasket.

Clean or replace your distributor cap. You have cross talk

Opened her up today and notice intake #1 was extremely loose but looks like the stud is coming out, because the nut wasn't loose I tighten it down using the correct zero lash procedure it seems locked down now. My question is should I take it in to get a new stud pressed in?

Found one solution. Buy an oversized stud ream out the hole and hammer it in using a special tool that fits over the threaded end. Anybody ever try this while still on boat?

Changing to screw. But I'm wondering if it's possible to over heat but have gauge at 120 degrees. My temp never goes above 140. Water doesn't come out of the outdrive exhaust as much as it comes out the hull outlet above the bilge plug.
