Well, I will be replacing my 1985 aq260 currently mated to an aq280 drive. What are my options in a long block? Any way to increase hp while keeping existing exhaust/intake, drive and transom shield? If I go w vortex heads, will I have to replace exhaust, or just intake?

TIA
TOM

Re: Aq260 repower options

how much power can you afford? what is your intention. more top end? faster hole shot? what kind of boat?

with the vortec heads, you just replace the intake. if your motor is in good shape, no reason to replace the short block if you are only switching to vortec heads.

If it were me and I had to replace the long block, here is what I would do. I would go to my favorite local speedshop and have a 383 stroker built. I would use a 268 duration Marine cam such as a Comp Camps extreme marine 268. I would also used forged internals so I could put a blower on it.

Re: Aq260 repower options

Thanks. Boat is a 28ft bayliner contessa 2850 fb. I will be replacing a cracked block, and didn't want to lImit myself to 260hp if I didn't have to. Exhaust is new, so I'd rather not replace that or the o/d or related components.
Thx
Tom.

you dont want to get into blowers etc on a boat like that, im going through the same question with a repower, i think im going to buy a complete fuel injected package, it comes complete with fresh water cooling and they tell me it bolts right in, the 350 ci gets around 350 hp, im not looking to go any faster its just my boat needs 3/4 throttle to stay on plane, its an 88 23 steigercraft, i think its the ticket for us, there are a few companies out there do a google search, my boat is only 210hp now im going for the 300 hp option, good luck

with a 28' and a small block, you will be looking for cruisability. I still recommend a 383, however maybe drop down to a 262 cam.
