AQ270 won't trim up after hitting a 2x8

So, I have a 85 Bayliner 1950, with an AQ125b and an AQ270 outdrive.

Last week, was having a wonderful weekend with the girl when I hit a 2x8 while running at a fair clip. It sounded like it popped the drive up, but low after powering down and checking it out, everything seemed to worked fine. Long story short, looks like it won't trim up now (even though the trim motor works back on land and the trim light indicates trim up- the outdrive doesn't move...)

The motor works, and the thrust plate moves up and down (from outside the boat.) But it looks like there's a metal rod (the thrust rod?) that's broken off directly below the thrust plate. (It runs down to the bottom of the drive, and ties onto a horizontal crosspiece.)

I have the Clymer's manual, and have searched the forum but haven't find a good diagnostic procedure anywhere- they all deal with the solenoids and electrical parts, not the mechanical parts outside.

The strange thing is I can't even lift up the drive when the tilt is trying to push it up and the thrust rod is pushing down.

Anyone have any thoughts? I'm pretty good at taking things apart and replacing broken parts (just did a head gasket change on my truck with just some written instructions.) But can't guess where to start with this thing. Maybe the marina is the quickest way out?

(Have a picture of what I can see is broken, but can't get to upload at the moment...)

(And yeah, I circled back and picked up the two pieces of 2x8 so no one else would hit it...)
Thanks all- grateful for any thoughts.

Sounds like the locking mechanism has locked in place.
Need pics if possible.
If you can't load them here send me a PM(if you can) and I'll send my e-mail.

Hi Jerry- Thanks!
Here's a pic.... I think you're exactly right- the top of the thrust rod is broken, so the lock mechanism at the bottom isn't being released before the thrust plate gets to the yoke part... I'm going to test this this weekend. Very grateful for your comment, and will post the result.

The top of the release rod's(called a thrust sleeve 897722part# )been broken.
Not gonna be fun trying to fix.
But it can be done. The whole lock system will have to be taken out.
This site doesn't sell these parts. They send you to the link below.
http://volvopentastore.com/ will have the parts and diagrams for the parts.

The lock mechanism 2 hook like things they can be machined to work better.
Take it apart and post some pics.

# 47 in the link, is the trust sleeve.

the thrust sleeve is screwed on the top of the rod. I once was successful removing a broken sleeve and treading on a new one without taking it apart.
Good luck. let us know how it goes.
