Hey all!
I have a AQ280 that I just tuned up. Here's what I did; Spark plugs gapped to .035, dwell set to 30 with new points and condenser, timing set to 8 degrees BTDC. Idle set to 700 RPM. Replaced the main fuel filter and the carb fuel filter. The boat starts great but idles a little rough. When giving it some throttle it goes up to about 2500 RPM then spits and sputters and will give no more! Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Welcome Craig.

Did it run correctly before the tune up? Can you confirm the timing is advancing?

After much troubleshooting I figured it out! On the points there is a piece of metal that keeps tension on the points to keep them firmly closed when the felt in on the flat of the cam. As we sat there staring at the new points installed and the old points sitting there also it was noticed that the old points had 2 metal strips, one copper color and a much stiffer one overlapping it. The new points only had the thin copper one! That meant that when we went to high RPM the points started to chatter! Once we put the second piece in the which provided the needed tension it ran like a champ! Thanks for your inquiry!
