AQAD40A Volvo Penta...silly Question?

Please help, I am trying to remove the timing gear cover so that I can change out the front oil seal on the crankshaft.
Because this is a really tight bolt in the end of the crankshaft, I am having a lot of trouble getting it loose.
I think the rule is that nuts are normal thread for a clockwise rotation, Bolts should be reverse thread...?
This is a 1" bolt (AF) in the centre of the front end of the crankshaft but I am not sure which direction to rotate it to get it out. Its bloody tight and hard to get at....
Frustration abounds!

Thanks guys, Ira :)

Ayuh,... I've never worked on a motor like your's,...
But I've also Never ever seen a lefthanded crankshaft bolt either..

Impact usually makes a Big difference loosenin' bolts....

It's not a left handed bolt holding the hub on. It's a right handed thread that holds the polygonal hub to the crankshaft. The vibration dampner is held onto the hub with 6 small bolts around the edge. The large bolt needs an impact.
Before you try to go any further, have a look a the manual. You are about to do a lot of expensive damage.

Here's the link to the oem manual. http://www.4shared.com/document/qlKPva2c/7752370_AQAD_40.html

Thanks Bond-o, Don S,
Don, Thanks for the link. Yes I have a copy of that and it does not say much...just that you remove the bolt and take off the flange with the VP tool.
A puller that I can make up here from some plate steel.
Is there something that I should know? Please elaborate about the expensive damage....I hope to heat the bolt with my torch and then hit it loose with a socket and hammer.....No?
Thanks, Ira

Re: AQAD40A Volvo Penta...silly Question?

Ok. So I have heated it up...not red hot but HOT.
Fitted my socket and pulled on it with a 2meter (yards) long piece of pipe.
While the pulley is locked against the water pump with a long wrench.
Nothing moves and I don't want to break the wrench or the water pump Pulley.

I think it must be welded on...? I don't have a lot of space to swing a hammer so can't really use that technique.

Are we sure the thread is normal on this?

Cheers and thanks.. Ira :)

The thread is normal. You need an air-powered impact wrench/gun, one capable of over 100-120 foot-pounds of force. If you don't have the room to get a wrench/gun into the front of the engine, you're going to need a longer pipe on the wrench. Don't use a rachet; use a 1/2" breaker bar with a heavy-duty socket. I'm not that familiar with Volvo engines; my experience is basically with Mercruisers. But, both of them are GM blocks. Before you go any further, I suggest that you check if you can pull off the timing cover without dropping the oil pan. On Mercruisers you can't; the pan must come off, so the engine has to be pulled. His engine is an inline 6 cylinder Volvo diesel, not a Chevy V8.

I don't know about you, but I am quite sure it's standard thread.

It's not welded on, corrosion and time maybe. You do not hammer it off, you use an impact wrench as stated, for the nut. Then you use a puller to remove the hub. If you don't have room, you remove the engine.
You also don't have to remove the timing gear cover to replace the seal. Just remove the hub with a puller, you will need to heat the hub to install, but not remove. You can't even get to the part that needs heat with it installed.
