Hey All,
Firstly, a huge thanks to everyone that helped me when I started second guessing myself on this project last month. I am happy to report that I have worked through everything, got the first boat running successfully and am now helping with a second. My issue ended up being preload - My lesson learned? Don't try and use a beam torque, spend the money on the dial or don't do it yourself!
I have another Mercruiser Alpha One Gen 2, also a 1992. The in-laws and their friends apparently decided to buy these boats at the exact same time. I need to replace the double bearing package on the yoke, I know the process, have Service Manual 14 printed and in a binder, but have a question about arbor presses...
I know I am going to need one as they are the press fit style bearings\gears. This is one tool that I do not currently own. Can I get one of the small dinky ones at Harbor Freight that are for 1 ton? Do I need to get an H Frame one? I don't really need an arbor press for the woodworking and other mechanical stuff I do and the few times in life I have, I headed down to my buddies machine shop. Unfortunately, he is out of town and I want to do this before the season is completely over.
So - Arbor press for doing these bearings on the yoke... What do you recommend?
Thanks!
Chris\AChris- You sir, I am indebted with gratitude. It sounds like you also dive - if I ever happen to run into you and know it, I owe you a round post-diving or in general.
