Are after-market parts recommended for transom service?

Hello all! I have been hanging out here for a few months now reading and posting. Gotta admit, I think this is the best place I have ever come across for boating Q&A. I am totally hooked! I have answered some questions for some of the other guys, but now it's my turn to ask some of the gurus out here for a hand :) I was wondering about some of the after-market stuff sold here and around. I plan on replacing all of my bellows this spring. While I am in there I'll throw in a gimbal bering and grease seal, and also while I'm there I think I'll change the trim and tilt sending units. (those flimsy wires are starting to go south)! I have always used OEM Merc parts. Period! I have changed bellows before for a few buddies and still pushed the Merc parts on them. Been looking around the net and I see that GLM Marine offers near identical replacement parts. They even claim they make improvements to parts that they feel are flawed by Merc engineering (IE: stronger lower unit casings for Alpha 1) Would any of the experts here consider using GLM or any other replacement parts. I can get a GLM transom kit for under $100.00 while a genuine Merc kit will be well over $200.00. So what do you think guys? Would you by the GLM stuff or spring for the genuine Merc. Price isn't that important, but if they are repackaged parts that are the same in quality the choice is obvious! Other question is when replacing hinge pins do you guys use the specified locquic primer and threadlocker? Or do you all use the standard automotive grade 242 blue? I have used the 242, but is that really the smart thing to do? Thanking you all in advance for making my boating experience a fun and safer one! ;)

I buy my parts at NAPA, Sierra parts/NAPA packages....
I hear GLM is also pretty good stuff too.... I just don't have the "walk in + buy it" option for them....
I've used the "less than permenant" Lock-tite....

You Might want to consider doing the Lower Shift Cable, While you have it In your Hand......

I used a bunch of GLM parts rebuilding my Cobra O/D.. If the Mercruiser was as good quality I'd have no qualms.

-Roger

I've always used original factory replacements, but that's because they were readily available and generally in stock. If I had my druthers, I'd go with original equipment replacements. But most parts are made by vendors that make them for whoever wants to buy them including aftermarket brands. So all-in-all, I guess it's a flip of the coin. I do know that if you use factory parts, all subsequent damage would be covered should any warranty issues arise. Aftermarket warranties might only cover their parts. Check into that before you make your final decision.

WillyBWright is correct. Factory parts, should they fail, are covered by a parts AND LABOR warranty. Aftermarket parts, if bad, have to be sent back and the manufacturer determines if it is a warranty situation, then if it is, will send a replacement part, but will not normally pay the labor, or your time out of service.

That Maybe, But,
The Equipment I'm running has been Out of Warrantee for 10 Years or More.....(20 is more like it :D )
And, I've had No Failures that can be atributed to Failed Parts....
