i was running my new (new to me) 1967 17foot glastron crestflite, i was planned out at about half throttle, tried to turn and it seems like all the boat did was just lean, HARD, didnt seem like it wanted to turn. am i doing something wrong?

now this is only the second time ive had it in the water, the first time it shot a spark plug, so today i ran it, tried to turn, and it spooked me so bad, i turned around and fast idled back to the launch!

the boat does sit awful high in the water for its size, could it have been it wasnt trimmed right? do i need the some of the front end in the water to turn?

somebody help me, im kinda scared of this boat now

(or could it be the fact that for the past forever ive ran an aluminum flat bottom?)

If your used to flat bottom aluminums it's probally just you, It's the same for someone new just learning to ride a motorcycle. Your very leary because it feels like it's going to tip all the way over. Don't worry it won't. Eventually you'll learn to enjoy how the leaning feels.

You can also try to trim the boat IN more. this will cause the bow to come down and the stern drive to push the bow during a turn. If your trimmed to far out the rear of the boat only is cutting into the water and prop angle causes the bow to just kind of lean rather then be pushed in the direction you want to go.

Play with trimming and see how it feels. Do you have any friends that are boaters? they can better take you out and explain how to properly trim a boat out. Yes it takes a little finess to get it right.

well splat, i appreciate it, actually last time i rode a dirt bike i laid it down on the concrete, so maybe not the best example, but i understand what you mean. im not new to boats but ive never owned a deep v like this one, and for a deep v it sits awful high in the water, i was thinking it needed some ballast, or it needed to be trimmed in.

ive rode in plenty of shallow v bass boats and trihulls, but this is my first deep v, and i was under the impression they were supposed to turn sharp, and i guess since you sit in the front of this boat i didnt notice how high the bow was out of the water.

i reckon i need to take it back out and play with the tilt pin, i think 1 or 2 holes in should bring the bow down far enough to grab in the water.

thanks splat

My girlfriend loves the hard turns. She calls it a "Don Johnson" turn. The first time is scared the P*ss out of her. She got keen to it quick. With throttle adjustments during the turn, I can give her a cooling spray of water when she sits up in the bow.

Since you don't have power trim, you can always find a happy medium with the pin and just chop the throttle when you initiate a turn, and then once the bow hooks power through the turn. Chopping the throttle will drop the nose into the water and get it to hook for you.

Does it has one of them fins on the cavitation plate? If the motor isn't tilted just right they tend to push just like your experiencing, and it can be scarry.

Good point, I forgot about Dolefins and hydrofoils. They can be a little meticulous here.

no, i dont have a hydro foil, but like i said, it just scared the ever loving crap out of me! i shut it down immediately, not even worrying about if water came over the transom and swamped the boat! i turned around and headed for the dock.

so trim in it is, ill tweak it next time i take it out, thanks everybody!

I went from a jon to a v hull to and it did freak me out a little the first time I turned hard, if you turn hard enough water will actually come off the top of the gunnal but it turns hard, really freaks out my fishing buddy, kinda funny,

Yours leaning but not turning is very odd.

Take it out again and kinda sneak up on it, run the boat progressivly faster and turn back and forth just to get a feel for it and what it wants to do.

Trimming down when you turn is pretty standard, you don't need to trim alot, just kinda swipe your thumb across the button should do it.

this is a classic example of learning what your boat will do, and what it can do. yes in a sharp turn at power it will lean, you have the friction of the water, and with the motor turn the torque and thrust is being push to the side, thus lifting the side of the boat.

My old Glastron was one of the best handling boats I'd ever driven. On a hard right turn I could stick my hand out the right side of the boat and touch the water, she was leaned WAY over but cornered great. I'd have to go like a bat out of hell and really push the boat hard to get the rear end to slide around in a hard turn but otherwise...she was a great ride!

Fear not the lean! Life is in the curves, learn to enjoy them !! :D
