Are early 80's Merc 3.0L eng blocks compatable with later model 90's eng blocks?

I've really been frustrated fixing all the ancillary components on my '92 Baja 180 Islander with the Mercruiser 3.0L Serial #OD801697, Alpha one Gen II . It's my first boat and it looks great, but I've been through the ringer with the motor. New alternator, distributor, coil, exhaust manifold, fuel pump, ign module, etc, etc... Big money into the motor that's finally running and sadly it's leaking water into the oil. The cracked exhaust manifold should have been the clue to step back and take a deeper assessment dive into a poorly winterized boat. Financial decisions fueled with impatience and only rookie knowledge usually aren't good ones.

At this point I'm assessing the alternatives. New remanufactured long block, used complete motor, turn key project boat with a good motor, etc??? There are lots of these used 3.0L motors out there but will the early points ignition motors be compatable? For simplicity sake it seems GM would have made the distributor drive on the cam the same for the electronic ignition distributors as for the earlier points style units. My question is; Will my '92 distributor work on an earlier 80's block if I change out all the ignition components? Is there anything else I would need to look for on an earlier engine block that might make the change over difficult/expensive/labor intensive? :( Thanks in advance for your reply!!!

Nevermind... I just ordered a brand new 3.0L long block from MichiganMotorz.com. $2400 shipped with no core charge... I didn't want to go through the agony of defeat again with a used block... I should be on the lake by next weekend and then winterize after that. Life is so cruel.

Thanks Bond-o! I've learned quite bit of knowledge right here and as a DIYer it's invaluble... Many thanks to all the moderators and those in the know...
