Are Lunds overrated?

OK, I don't want to start any fights here, but I'd like to know if Lunds are really the best thing on the water and if so why. I've never fished in a Lund. I grew up fishing out of a Starcraft and that was one tough boat. But most everyone says that Lund is better. Let' hear it.

Re: Are Lunds overrated?

I owned a Lund 16ft Rebel 1988 model bought it with about 30hrs on boat motor and trailer in 1993. It had a 30hp Evinrude on it which was too small ended up putting a 40 Yammi on it ran great. I had transom flexing with the 40 on it the boat was hardly ever stored outside so I didn't think is was rotted out. In 1999 I ripped the floors and transom apart everything was rotted. I rebuilt everything then traded the boat in for a 2002 Starcraft 170LE with a 115 Merc. Personally I think Lunds are over rated and would never buy one again!!!!

If you visit northern midwest walleye country you are likely to see more Lunds than all others combined.

Does that make them best? No, but it does say what those fishermen think.

Yes, I think they are.

They (Lund), if nothing else, have done a marvelous marketinng job in the upper midwest.

Their following is particularly strong in Minnesota and the Dakotas and points north from there. They do not enjoy the same following in places like Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and points east.

I think they're built like a brick ****-house; stronger than any other aluminim out there anyway. But the price isn't warranted at all.

Re: Are Lunds overrated?

I own a Lund and a Starcraft. They are both great boats, both stable and well put together. All though two totally different boats. Lunds reputation was started with the larger boats, to this day, I don't think you will see much difference in the smaller ones.

I will be replacing the Lund in the sping, yes with another Lund. But I have to agree, you do pay more for the name, the name helps in resale as well.

I don't think they're "over rated" at all. I have a 20" Alaskan. If you like fishing or need a good utility boat, this thing can pack one heck of a load. I have the 95' model, rated for 11 passengers! New ones are rated for 8 I think, cause instead of stuffing foam everywhere they build rod-lockers, battery compartments, live-wells, ect. I'm happy with my toy. Handles well. Even in the ocean. That's why I'm bumping this post back up top! :D

MajBach,

Just hose it off good when you're done. And flush the engine. BUT, if you're thinking of leasving it in the salt water, that's a different story. Every time I do that for more than a few days, I find more little corrosion spots on my transom!!!!! Gotta check for a bad wire or something, I put a zinc right in the hull last year. Tired of filling in those little spots with JB Weld! May put one of those zinc monitoring systems in next. I see plenty of Lunds in the salt, think it's more of a bonding/grounding issue with me. The 20 footer and all the electronics..... but I know there's big aluminum yachts out dere so.........

PS Dog's name in Luna, bought the Lund, started talking names to myself and...... :D :D :D

Re: Are Lunds overrated?

I got it the first time...LOL

BTW, I remember hearing that there is a difference to using zinc over magnesium. Is there one that's better for salt water use?

Re: Are Lunds overrated?

Wiseguy, :p

The 3 posts happened during yesterday afternoons site crash, got error message from Admin. Was hoping he was going to remove the duplicates. But he's busy so....

There is a table called "Galvanic Series of Metals and Alloys in Seawater" and yes, magnesium is on the bottom, right below zinc, but I never heard of anyone using it on a boat.

Best bet is the drive through self-serve carwash right after you pull the boat. Or were you thinking of keeping it in?

I checked my zinc to boat continuity last night with a meter. Can't figure out why I got more of those pinholes though! Only 3, but that's 3 too many!!!!!!!!
