Are outboard catalog statements true?

Hi, I was reading through an old Evinrude catalog on Ebay, and happened to come across an ad for my 1972 Evinrude 9.5 hp. In the ad, it said "This motor will push 3 men and their gear at clips of 20 mph." Is this kind of statement true? If my motor even thought about pushing my jon boat that fast with 3 people in it, it would probably overheat and die! I can't imagine my little Evinrude doing that fast even brand new! Any comments? Thanks

Brent

Hi Brent
Of course it's true. The add didn't state how large the men were, or how big the boat was, or how much gear they had. I have a 14' Sears brand beer can aluminium boat V-type hull with a 10hp evinrude. It will get fairly close to twenty MPH with a 500lb load. Under optimum conditions of corse.

Alcan, how heavy is your boat and what year is your motor? I sure wish I knew how fast mine does top-end, but I don't think it's worth putting in a speedo for a 1975 14' jon boat. Mine really might be doing close to 20 mph, but it's hard to tell on water! Thanks

Brent

Re: Are outboard catalog statements true?

Hi Brent
I really don't know how much the boat weighs. I can pick the thing up myself. It is very lite-weight and not too strong, fairly narrow. My motor is a mid 80s comercial model called a super 10. No real hot-rod. My point was that differnt rigs get differnt results under differnt cercomstances. So three lite weight men with life jackets and a gal.1\2 of gas in a 12'boat with a tail wind might be able to hit 20MPH on a regualr basis.

Hahaha...nice illustration, I get your point. I just wish it were true for my motor under the circumstances that I usually deal with!

Brent
