Are there repairs for 1/4 " plastic coated steering cables? My 1968 Ray Craft?s steering cable, Fuel Line and Rear Trailer light?s lens got sun damaged (from not enough tarp converge from ?Late Evening?s Texas Sun). Under a tree and a tarp there was a window of sun not noticed coming in an open back (vs rain). Inspecting, the uncoated, ?Good Looking? undamaged section is approx 2? and were off the rollers (see the attachment). Could it be Galvanized to look so good because a magnet said it?s not stainless? Is there a ?Reinforced Shrink Tape? that will protect this section? Or should I just add some grease on it for my few more years of ?Possible Use?? Since I have had a Nap (LOL), I should be able to slide insulation from Etc wire or Etc onto the cable or splice in a section od insulated cable. ?But Catch A Mess Of Fish First?!

The 35 HP Chrysler and Boat ran well 1984 -2014 when a drought and age matters slowed us. We still plan to get back to ?Close Local Spring Fishing?. The cable is the ?Major Issue? (with age and memory 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]). The fishing piers/barges are not like Trot lines and channels we know.

Last! How do I keep Mice out of the stored boat? I am using Traps and Poison without seeing any good results vs cleaning with Clorox and hot water approx every 3-6 months. How can you tell Squirrel droppings from Rat?s? I have seen rats and squirrels walking the close chain-link fences top rail. They pay no attention to my BB-Gum or Live Trap after years of trapping. I have tried Fox Urine without any luck. What have you used that worked year after year???

Thanks For Sharing!!!

As far as the cables...Scott's suggestion is what you do. If a magnet doesn't stick, then it's probably stainless. The only negative thing that I can think of as far as the bare section of cable is that if the pulleys are plastic, and the bare section is riding on them, it might wear them faster than normal.

Rats and squirrels are always tough to get rid of. The only solution that I've seen work for any length of time is a cat.

You don't want to mess around with that cable once the coating is split.

iBoats sells the cable, 3/32 steel with a 3/8 OD coating, but you don't need 250 feet. Home Depot has it too and by the foot The steel is galvanized and I took a small chunk with me to match. Over estimate how much is needed, I got 50' and used all but maybe 10'.

store the boat in the garage, use shavings of irish spring in a few disposable bowls. the smell helps keep mice and spiders away.

The 1968 boat was stored in a warehouse and solid as a rock when I purchased in 1984. Under a tarp was my only reasonable way of storing the boat. I thought I was doing good until I discovered the sun?s damages from late evening?s West Texas Sun. I replaced Marine Fuel grade Fuel line, rear Tail light lenses and added more tarp to cover the rear. The steering cable did not appear bad at that point.

We only fished summers until we retired in 03. A server Drought kept us off the water 03 ? 06. The mistake was not checking the Boat regular (since it was my 1[SUP]st)[/SUP]. The rats moved in and made a big mess and destroyed Life Jackets I thought were secured in a storage compartment. We recovered, found the entry to the storage (too much space where rod tips exited the storage) Spring and summer fishing slowed with age and e went out with Guides and fished Barges/Piers With no boat Loads.

The bottom line is how much do we put into a boat to ?maybe run trot lines a few more years?. Plus we only fish from a boat when two or more boats are present. It is time to get in one of the ?Younger Boats? 2-3 trips a Year. A good Balance Since I help on many of the welding and mechanical repairs. I am 3-4? away from Firewood but never noticed any droppings until the 03-06 drought. BUT! A dumpster was added approx 100 yards behind the wood. I do see squirrels and rats walking the top rail of the 10 foot high fence just before dark by the wood. Well! The wood is attracting the squirrels and the Cafeteria?s waste in the Dumpster is attracting the rats ?Due To Me Slowing?!!! Keep Moving My Friends!

No Title

The Storage Box was still Rat Proofed due to reducing Rod Slots. Not One Drop! Now I need to consider Critter Ritter, Fox Urine and Etc to keep the Critter out of the rest of the Boat. I have left it open the last week with no signs of activity. A Pet Snake in the Boat is what I need. LOL! We did find one next door. Probably following a known rat?s trail along the fence.

I don't think there is such an animal as a pet snake.

We think they're pets.
They ain't smart enough to think much of anything!
The only "animal" that qualifies as a pet?? Dog and cat.

I've had cats for years. Not one mouse or rat in my place..
You can train a cat.
No stinky litter boxes.
