Are these lower units interchangable?

1971 50 HP Evinrude (50172S) and a 1972 50 HP Johnson (50ESL72C)

I have found a sweet deal on the 50172S as a parts motor and I own the 50ESL72C.

I guess you could look up the parts for the different lower units and see if they match.

Yeah, it wouldn't just bolt on and go. But, it does have a lot of the same parts like the shifter solenoids, forward and reverse gears, water pump, shift wire assembly, etc. Seems that the drive shaft, cluctch dog and a couple other things are the only difference. But, I think it is worth $50 for me to pick up this motor and use it as a parts motor...the electrical has some of the same parts also.

I'd say well worth it! as a parts.I would even try to see if the lowers are interchangable,Some of the motors I have done and the parts showed as not changable, actually did interchange,The new year had some minor improvment parts in it but they did bolt up and work.I just stayed away from using the older unit on the newer motors
