A hint of what engine is involved would be a teeny tiny bit of help...

Trace them out. The tan is usually overheat alarm sender and the brown/white may be for a temp gauge. Perhaps the PO removed the overheat sender and replaced it with a temp sensor?

my manual says brn/white is trim. and i believe the tan is for the water temp. my trim sender is missing. i am guessing that these wires should not be joined together in holy matrimony....?
