Tried posting this the other night and somehow it got Zapped. Don't know by who or why.

In my area code, the phone company started having us dial the area code first before dialing local and long distance. They said it would be this way across the country.

SBN was able to get a reply in before this topic got zapped. He said he dials just the number for local.

How many of you out there have to dial the area code first on any type of call? Just curious....SS

Re: Area Codes (2nd time)

Here in Central Minnesota with so many outlying areas going "METRO" with the Twin Cities the area code is required.I live 30 miles from the far west suburb and we are going "METRO" soon.
This does make it possible to call about 90 miles away without long distance charges.Heck it probably won't and I'll be able to call Neumanns as a local call!!!

SS,
I heard that we, too, will soon be required to use the area code for all calls here in the Columbus area. Do you know if you must dial "1" each time, and if there's a toll associated with calling out of your area code for what were once local calls?
Thnx,
Brian

SS you must live in the land of the unknown...Here we just dial # for local calls and its the same when I am in in Columbus....
Bart.. Neaumanns is so far out that the Pony Express is still used for snail mail..

Yea SS, we are on a calling plan where we can even call numbers that would any other way be long distance numbers by just dialing the number with no area code involved.

Same with our regular local numbers.

Bart, you would not want to get ahold of neumanns any way. :p

Re: Area Codes (2nd time)

Brian, no you don't need to dial 1, just for long distance. Just for local calls, we have to dial the area code.

Hmmmm, I smell something rotten, why does my area code get to be the freakking guinea pig?

Gonfishn, Columbus is next. Cleveland was changed over the same time my area was. Then it will be Cinncinnati. I think that will fall in your neck of the woods. Warning: It is a pain in the buttox!

People in your local area, just down the street knowing that your just blocks away will include the area code. It's like Duh? We have the same prefix, same local area, and like I'm stupid or something? (DON"T ANSWER THAT) I just give them the number without the area code and then they'll ask "Is that a 419 area code). You just can't win somethimes.

SS

What ever happened to "DERWOOD"?

Hey MAYFLOAT,
We had to start doing that in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area of Texas about 2 years ago. Was kinda a paint the rear for a couple of weeks. I am so used to it now that I have difficulty dialing local call in areas that this does not apply.

I live in a small town in s.e. nc. and we don't dial area code first but we do pay long distance for calling six miles away. it's becoming an old cb-radio town real quick.

Re: Area Codes (2nd time)

We don't have to dial the area code even though they were going to make in mandatory around 5 years ago. We can or not. For long distance, we do have to dial a 1 before the call. I don't mind eithr way. I am used to dialing the area code bacaue I use my cell phone a lot and as I cross over carrier boundaries I have to.

I remember when I was growing up the thrill we had getting our own phone line instead of a party line. The neighbor had a tendancy to pick the phone up and swear if we were on it. The only bad thing was that the new number we got was one number off the bus station so we got calls at all hours of the night asking when the next bus to wherever was. After a year of complaints, the phone company did not charge us for changing the number. Ahh the good ol'...days. Phone progress sure has been sweet.

Re: Area Codes (2nd time)

In Vancouver WA, we are still able to dial local numbers without an area code. I understand that at some time in the future we will have to use the area code. Across the river, in Portland OR, they have to dial the area code for all local calls. The reason that this is happening is because they are planning on 'layering' new area codes as the the telephone population expands to the point that new area codes need to be added. Layering means that a new neigbor who orders telephone service may get a different area code than you have, causing you to have to dial an area code just to reach your next door neighbor. Several years ago, there was a great outcry from people, with large telephone systems, who claimed that their equipment could not be converted to new area codes without great expense, upto and including the replacement of their equipment. Personally, I think this to be misguided policy. You used to be able to tell what geographic area you were calling by the area code. Soon, everywhere, you will not be able to do this, plus the added pain of adding more numbers to your life.

I'll ditto Texskeeter on the deal in DFW. Another thing I have noticed is, depending on your cell phone number, you need to dial "1" first.

I am in 817 and I do not need a "1" to dial 214, 972 or 940 from home. But if I want to call SWMBO on her cell phone, I need to dial "1".

Shucks, we just turn the crank and get ole Ethal to hook us up to what ever party we want. 'cept o'course, ole man Hinkle. For him we gotta get Bubba on the phone and he will run over to the next farm where ole man Hinkle lives and fetch him for us.

As I understand it, all phone numbers will require 10 digits before too long.
Here in the Puget Sound, it was always 206. Now we have 206, 253, 360, 425.
I just use the cell phone.

Just saw this,

Where I work we have to use 10 digit dialing but at home I can still just use the number unless long distance.
