I am looking for a deer rifle. This guy says this would be a good rifle for a beginner like me it is a 7.65 caliber. I don't know a whole lot about hunting guns. What do you guys think?

Read this:

http://www.gunsandammomag.com/classics/ct0405_1909/

You have to decide, but I think it's more of acolectible than a shooter - unless the condition kills any collector value. Then you need to have it checked for safety by a qualified ginsmith.

I'd say to get a Mauser in 7X57, which is more readily available, and has been used successfully with African Big Game.

but that's just my opinion...

Try Glocktalk.com and ask your question in the "Non-Glock" forum - you'll get more than enough information over there!

Re: argentine mauser

A lot depends on where you will be hunting. Bagging Muleys in the SouthWest at 300 yards is far different from in heavy brush like the Michigan UP.

For one, a flat traveling round with good punch is the best and something easy to maneuver in close quarters for the other.

In either case, .30 cal is my chamber of choice ... 30.06 (accurate to 500x and easy to find) for the long stuff and 30/30 carbine in close (out to about 100x).

7.65 seems an odd round to me. 7.62, however, is quite popular (NATO round of choice 30 years ago), equates to .308 and is readily available - cheap.

I could be wrong because I have never deer hunted before, but most of the people I talk to seem to say that here in missouri conditions are usually brushy, and most of your shot are less than 100 yards. Now this is just coming from a couple of different guys, so I don't know. It seems like there are a lot of used guns for sale this argentine mauser was in the right price range, and the guy said it would be a good gun for a beginner.

Short shots 100 yards and under 30-30 win is max you need for that kind of shooting , used guns are everywhere in 30-30 ,for that range I would prefer 44magnum carbine like the ones made by marlin or ruger, they will be a little pricer than the used 30-30s but should be $200 to $250.used 30-30 should be $125- $175 These prices are for my area of the country, they varry in different areas. I have shot the arg. 7.65 mauser , killed my 2nd deere with on when I was a kid , wasnt impressed then or now.

Re: argentine mauser

If I was going to buy my first rifle knowing what I know now I would probably buy a 308 win cal. fairly flat shooting to 250 yds plent of knockdown but wont kick your head off. Most people have no bussiness shooting over 250 yds. I have killed many deer with many caliber rifles from 22lr to 300 win mag. My longest kill was320 yds. It was an unusual case, normaly I wont take the shot unless I am sure of the shot.

Re: argentine mauser

I am really in no hurry to buy since hunting this season is probably not possible. My plan is to buy a rifle, and practice with it over the next year and try to go out next year. I had never heard of an Argentine mauser, so I thought I would ask. If I could get a 30-30 for under 200 dollars like heycods suggests then I will just wait for that one. I am in the beginning stages of researching my newest adventure so any input is greatly appreciated. thanks

Good plan, stl.

The Argentine Mauser is just that ... an Argentine copy of the German Mauser which had, arguably, the best action for the time and maybe now.

The metal work is pretty good, but the stock work left a little to be desired in the ones I saw. Nothing wrong with the weapon, though.

If you have any experienced friends to assist, you might check the pawnshops in your area for cheap, good quality guns. They usually have loads of them.

I'd look for a 30.06 or a 308.The 30-30 is fine but you will want a bigger gun before long.

The 7.65 Argentine is a weak round with limited bullet choices and availability. It's OK (assuming a sound rifle) and will kill a deer, but certainly isn't a wunderlust. And I've seen no collector value attached to the rifle; it's a run of the mill Mauser in a wierd cartridge.

Fixin, You probably know Missouri hunting terrian better than me. People have told me that a 30-30 is all you need, since most of the hunting here is in brush. Would a 30-06 be hard to learn to shoot. It has been suggested to me to buy a .22 and learn to shoot with it, and then get a bigger gun and go hunting. Thats good advice, but the reality is that the gun I buy is the one I am going to keep, and the one I am going to hunt with.

Re: argentine mauser

I have owned a half dozen 30=06s in my life some of them kick like a govt. mule, not my choice for a novice hunter. a wonderful cartg. though Im not saying a 308 wont kick but I have never owned one that did, then we can get into the 260 or the 7-08 or a multitude of others but we will just be muddying the water. I dont know about yall but I hate muddy water,I never catch fish when its muddy water, well maby a few cats at the shoals on the creeks. Da-n did I loose the thread.

ST,the 22 is a great way to learn how to shoot.Just be careful what you shoot at,because of ricochet.
I personally wouldn't think you would have a problem with the 06.Was my first deer rifle.Other options are bow, crossbow and black powder.

Re: argentine mauser

Sounds as though you ae getting lots of good counsel, STL and I refer you back to my earlier post concerning the two types of deer country/shooting requirements.

If you have little or no shooting experience, then starting with a .22 is a fine idea. There's a lot more to responsible shooting than just pulling a trigger.

Check your Yellow pages for gun or shooting shops. Some have indoor ranges (generally 25 yards)and some will even rent you a .22 so you don't have to buy one. Nearly all good shops also give instruction at a really reasonable price.

Once you've learned accuracy with the .22 you won't have any problem moving up to either the 30-30 or 30.06.

Good luck and good hunting ...

Maybe I am just hard headed, but I don't understand the logic of practicing with a gun that you won't hunt with. I have shot a lot of guns in my life most of them hand guns, but I have shot a .22 when I was a kid. It was just target shooting, not hunting. It was no big deal. Whatever gun I buy I am going to practice, pactice, pactice. If my logic is wrong let me know.

stl, the object of the 22 is to save $$$$, your shoulder, and your ear drums while practicing. A box of 100 22 shells is $2 and a box of 20 30/30 shells is like $12 or more.

Re: argentine mauser

Having hunted in MO myself I would suggest that a 30-30 is adaquate. There are limited ammunition choices and they are pretty reliable. OMC is right... it is an economic choice. The 22 will really help you out in the sport.. lets do some math....

30-30 $200
10 boxes of shells $120 (200 rounds)
ear plugs $2
Okay lets call it $325 to be safe

When you practice you need a place to shoot that will provide a good backstop and where you won't be upsetting the world.

Shooting is Sight Picture, Breathing, Trigger Control There is no mention of caliber... it's all the same regardless of rifle. Now if you sincerely want to be a good shot practice should be about 50 rounds per week. That much practice with a 30-30 will wear it out and cause accuracy problems.

When I shot on a rifle/pistol team we were required to shoot a minimum of 100 rounds per day. The 22 was the best way to accomplish that... same basic rules apply. It was lighter, quieter and cheaper all around. It applied to both rifles and pistols.

You can draw your own conclusions. My personal choice for a rifle is a bolt action 308 or 30-06 due to the variety of available bullet weights. Now that I am older (laughing) I shoot a 45-70 with my own handloads... a shoulder buster!
