I recently purchased this boat. Good aluminum, but it needs work on the motor mount (rotted) and gunwales. I hope I'm using the correct terms here as I'm new to boating.

I was going to use pressure treated plywood for the motor mount and unsure what to use for the gunwales? The gunwales looks like a plywood strip bolted together with the aluminum in between. Not very nice !

Also what do you use for fasteners after the rivets are removed?

Any suggestions?

Regards, Al

I've heard that you shouldn't use pressure treated wood in aluminum boats because something in the treating solution will cause aluminum to corrode as it leaches out of the wood. You should only use marine grade ply and hardwoods.

Can anyone with some street cred restoring aluminum boats confirm this?

I sure would be interested in more info about an Arkansas Travler SP 14. I just bought one and know nothing about boats or boating. I just needed something to do and this looked like a project. I have the same problem with the rear of the boat. For the most part all of the wood is rotted out. Thinking about sand blasting the old camo paint off of at least the very bottom of the boat. Then try to sell it. Would this boat make any typ of duck hunting boat? Ed Bell

There is some copper in pressure treated wood. Copper and aluminum are far apart on the intrinsic scale and will cause electrolysis kinda like making a battery. Don't "sand" blast its to hard on the aluminum and can cause it to bend. You can use soda blasting or some other mild meadia blasting but you have to be awful careful. Paint stripper is ususlly the best bet.
