Hi Folks

I have a question about the shift hole in the motor leg. The book says to use sealant between the lower unit and the motor leg. But the hole in the motor leg for the shifter is not sealed. Any suggestions on types of sealants for motor leg --lower unit....gear housing cover..? How do you keep the new o-ring in place for the gear housing cover? I have bought all the seals ,crush ring , new water pump kit ,,Any advice would be geat.

Thanks Much

While "the book" may say to use sealant, it is not necessary and in fact, I don't know anyone who does use it. A thin coating of silicone RTV will seal the seam and possible help prevent corrosion, but as far as sealing exhaust gases, it is overkill.

Some larger Chrysler engines DID use a shift rod seal and another just like it where the rod comes through the leg -- again to prevent exhaust gases from coming out there. But again, it was overkill and discontinued. Nothing is necessary where the rod exits the leg.

Now, for the top cover/water pump base, I coat the lower unit with a light layer of silicone RTV just as insurance. Yes, you need to fight with the O ring. It is difficult to get it to stay in the groove and I have no hints there. Just keep trying. Do not coat it with anything-- that just lubricates it and makes it that much more difficult.
