I have a 1978 Evinrude 85 HP outboard. Motor runs fine but will not shift into forward or reverse. Removed control cable, moves correctly and easily. Disconnected shift rod to lower leg, pivot under carbs moves correctly and easily. Removed leg. Shift rod will not move up or down. I have not started disassembly yet and I don't have manual yet.
1. Any suggestions why shift rod does not move. This is fresh water engine and corrosion is non existant where it enters lower leg.
2. I can handle disassembly. On re-assembly, are special tools (ie dial guages) required?
3. Should I just pay the price and let a shop do the labor?
