Boating rookie here:

At idle with muffs on prop spins sometimes, and sometimes doesn't.

Couple of weeks ago it spun pretty fast at idle. Now it only spins slowly or not at all.

Is there something bad going on?

I replaced the lube at the beginning of the season. 1972 50 HP johnson

Well on the other hand if it is actually in gear when it should be in neutral--THEN you got problems!! But don't stick you foot in it to see if it is in gear.

Touch it gently and carefully with a 2 X 4 piece of softwood. If the prop stops then it is just a "drag factor" that transmits to the prop and no issue. If it actually is in gear then you do indeed have some major issues down there.

I have a 1994 60hp, and it spins peridoically as well when in netrual, there is absolutly no torque there though I can stop it with my finger.

I hope you didn't try it the first time with your finger !!!

It never spinns fast enough that I'm worried about stopping it with my finger.

Thanks for the advice fellas. Now I'm not worried about it.
